I posted this topic in the general section and a member suggested I might get some additional insight by posting in this section as well. Please see this link:

Hi Ken...I read through some but not all of the responses to your original post, so I don't know if anybody suggested this or not. When you're in live view, the mirror is locked up, but when you get out of live view, the mirror is down again unless you have that feature enabled. The mirror action could be causing the blur.

Thanks for responding Dixiegirl.
I tried mirror lockup and the result was the same. The LiveView image is definitely clearer and has greater contrast than the actual image. I also tried the same test using flash with the same result.

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to you, Ken, and if you find out what's causing the problem, I'd really like to know.

Nikon finally responded and requested sample images to determine if there is something wrong with the camera. Further experimentation leads me to believe that the setting of the Picture control affects the Liveview image. If I set the control to Neutral, the Liveview image and the acquired image, as displayed on the camera monitor, are identical to my eyes. I was unable to find a reference in the manual to any connection between the Picture control and IQ of the Liveview image but there is a definite affect.

Very interesting, Ken. Thank you for the report. Now I'm going to have to experiment with mine to see if I notice a difference.
