Has anyone used non-canon batteries in a t5i or t6i ? There is a significant price difference, but I'm reluctant to buy an inferior or worst, a battery that might damage the camera.

I have used 3rd party batteries in a Canon dslr and had a bad experience with them. The ones I bought heated quite a bit during use and would swell making it very difficult to remove and replace when needed so I buy only Canon - never a glitch with them.

What 3rd party batteries were they? Not all are created equal.

Were they Watson or Wasabi?

Like someone and everyone (?) before me, I use Canon OEM, Wasabi, and Vivatars with no issues.

I use Radio Shack batteries in my 10D since I got it years ago and my 7D as well. So far no issues for all the years I have had them.

I've never had a problem with 3rd party batteries for any of my Canon cameras. My last set was Wasabi Power, all the batteries work fine, and have kept a good charge while on the shelf. I do label every battery with date in service, and watch the warranty period. I've had one Canon battery fail after only 3 charges, within the 1 year warranty period. It was promptly replaced with a new battery from CPS. I use 3rd party batteries in my 5D Mark IV too.

I tried the Watson brand in my 5DM4. It powered the camera, but I got pop up warnings on the rear screen and no battery level display.
Has anybody tried Wasabi in the 5DM4?

Not in those specific models. I use Watson (from B&H) in my 6D and 5D3, like them better, they seem to hold a charge longer. The only battery failure I had was a Canon battery.

I have 2 Canon batteries and 2 off-brand batteries I got on Amazon for about a year. I haven't noticed any difference between them. Only my wallet knows the difference. Canon will convince you to use "their" batteries only. As you can see, many on here don't believe that and haven't had any problems. I think you are safe to save some money. (if thats possible with camera gear)

Indeed I decided to take a chance and just ordered 2 Wasabi batteries with a charger and car adaptor cord for $29.00. At that price it's worth at least trying them.

Camera will work fine, however some cameras wont communicate with the aftermarket battery, and you wont get battery power usage info on the camera or in the menu

I've thought about getting some Wasabi batteries, but have been reluctant because the reviews (on Amazon and other places) are, frankly, all over the map. Do they communicate with the camera (in my case a 6D and 7DII) like the OEM batteries?

They work just fine with my 6d
