Yes they will work, but why????? You lose half the mp's by shooting dx.

As Jethro said, yes they will work, but the camera will reduce the usable part of the sensor to DX size and you will lose many MPs.

The Nikon D810 is a great camera and it needs good FX lenses to get the best out of it.

Yes, but still more MP's than a top-of-the-line eight year old camera

Because you have the DX lens, and might not have an equivalent FX

I have a fine example for you. I use my DX 12-24 f4 Nikon lens on my D610 full frame from 16-24mm without vignettes. That is the only DX lens I use with it.
If you have a full frame camera and you want the best of it use only FX lenses.

That's probably true, but I don't see how that relates to the question.

Yes, the D810 will recognize the DX lens and "step down" the sensor to accommodate. You will be shooting at 15.9mp.
I sometimes shoot in DX mode (with FX lenses) when I need extra reach for my long tele's. But as a practice, the D810 needs pro quality FX glass to get the best out of the phenomenal 36mp sensor. Using the body with DX lenses is like filling the tank of a FIAT 500 with 95 octane fuel.

Can you explain how you do that?

Yes, I always keep auto DX off with my D800. Some zoom lenses work in FX mode with little vignetting over some of the range. For example my 10-24 shows no vignetting above 18mm.

You have to try each lens. My wife's 18-300 only works satisfactorislly in DX mode. Fortunately I have a 28-300.

The D800 offers five image areas. The middle two image areas operate with no vignetting over a wider range...e.g. over 15 mm with the 10-24.

I eventually bit the bullet and got the 16-35 for the D800. It does significantly better; in particular because it has VR. But it weighs and costs over twice the 10-24. So the 10-24 was a good fill in till I got up the GAS for the 16-35. Now I hardly ever use the 10-24. I mostly use my Sigma 17-50 and Nikon 200-500 on my D5300.

BTW a great reasonable lens for the D8xx is the 24-85. It has VR and filter threads and is much lighter and costs much less than other FX options in its range. Image quality is almost up to the 16-35.

yes, I use my DX lens on my Df, after I pay off the camera I will start to invest in full frame lens. Thankful the DX lens work well for now.

As others have responded... yes, they will work with the camera in "DX mode".

In that mode the camera utilizes only the central portion of its sensor... an area that's APS-C size, to match the lens.

The result will be slightly less than 15MP images... or roughly equivalent to an older, entry-level D3100 (14MP, $500 at Walmart w/kit lens).

You'd actually be better off using those DX lenses on a APS-C/DX camera such as a 21MP D500 or a 24MP D7200, D5600, D3400.

In other words... while they'll work, it's sort of a waste to use DX lenses on a 36MP FX camera. You would be best served getting FX lenses to use upon it.... Or getting one of the recent DX cameras to use the DX lenses on.

EDIT: Unfortunately it would be even worse on a Df.... Because that model is only about 16MP to begin with in full FX mode, in DX mode you end up with under 7MP... or not very much more resolution than a D70 from 2004. Or, a 24MP FX camera such as the D750 ends up with slightly less than 10MP when used in DX mode, and that's less resolution than a D90 from 2008.

The point is, among enthusiasts there just is so damn much hype and peer pressure to buy a full frame camera. Frankly, full frame won't make better images... that's up to the photographer. There are actually some things that crop sensor cameras do better. One of DX cameras' advantages is that they allow use of smaller, lighter, less expensive DX lenses. But if a full frame camera truly is the better choice for one's uses, there's not much sense "upgrading" to FX unless you also upgrade to FX lenses at the same time... or even buy the FX lenses before the camera if unable to do both at the same time. Using DX lenses on an FX camera is actually more of a step backward, more of a "downgrade" compared to using those same DX lenses on recent DX cameras.
