Looking to replace my Nikon D70S. The difference in cost is about $1000.What are the advantages of the D500 over the D7200? To state the question another way, what features I am giving up with the D7200 vs. the D500?

The only negative differences I can think of, if you want to call them that, is the D500 has no pop-up flash and uses two different memory cards (one SD and one XQD). You won't notice any real difference in the megapixels and everything else I see as positive. Right now there is a $200.00 INSTANT REBATE and a FREE BATTERY GRIP through December 31st.

I upgraded from a D7000 to a 7200 and honestly enjoy the 7200. I did look at the D500 and it feels and works like a Nikon full frame with features you'll not find on the 7200. For me, the decision was based on the kind of photography I do (mostly family and travel), the features each one has (again, for me the D7200 more than met my needs) as well as the fact that the D500 is more expensive. If you do have a photo store near you where you can do your own side by side comparison, you can decide which camera best suits your needs.
I'm sure others will give you a more precise opinion but in the end, it really is a matter of which camera best aligns with your needs and budget.

Why are you giving up the D70? I have a D70s and I'm happy with it but I'm curious as to what the other two have that the D70 doesn't.

There's a 7 minute head to head comparison of the two cameras on You Tube. Plus check out DP Reviews of each cameras. There is a price difference as you already mentioned.

The D500 is faster and can stay fast longer than the D7200. It's has faster frame rate and has bigger buffer and it has faster AF. The controls are better in my opinion but this is personal.

The d7200 is a great camera, the d500 is much better if you are photographing any action photography. What the d500 gives you above the d7200 is 10 fps, faster focusing, and a 200 shot buffer, and that is 200 shots in raw. The qd card is faster, as in much faster, than a standard sim card. Group focusing while shooting action shots.
I own both the d7200 and the d500 and I use the d500 as a prime camera and the d7200 has become my backup camera. If you are not shooting sports, birds in flight, or other action shots, the d7200 will be less expensive and will serve you well, but if you are shooting action, you will not regret moving up to the d500, it is an excellent camera.

The D500 also has flicker detection, which should compensate for the "flicker" with artificial lighting in some venues. It exhibits itself as inconsistent exposure and color even when using the same setting.
Having no built-in flash is not an issue- that on-camera light usually looks hideous!

Seriously?
The D7200 is the culmination of the line that actually began with the D70, 5 generations of serious improvement that would take pages to fill. Absolutely NOTHING from the D70 is retained today except for the Nikon F lens mount. (Oh, and the neck strap)
The D500 is the latest in the line begun by the D100, also several generations and many pages of improvement.

I find my 7200 fine for bird photography. It might not suffice if I was working for Nat Geo, but that is not the case. From what I have seen posted the image quality of the 7200 is better. This is only my opinion. Obviously, the 500 has some really nice features. Is the extra money worth it to you?

I upgraded my D70s to a D90 then to a D300s after returning 3 D90's, then to Df. My D70s stopped reading cards, all the D90's had exposure issues, the 1st D300s would not hold my settings, so I got a another. The Df had a couple issues, the last was a an internal Fstop finger that jammed up for no reason. They replaced it for free even after the warranty was expired. Boy was I happy! I am not rough with my gear being careful all the time. I do not have a high regard for Nikon QC.

Unless you really need 10 frames per sec and better ISO performance at 1600-3200, after that it drops down fast with the D500, I would go with the D7200.

The D7200 and D500 are cropped sensor cameras (like the D70 and D70s), and the leap in light sensitivity from the D70s to either of those 2 cameras will astound you. Back when I was shooting with either the D70 or D70s, I was afraid to set my ISO over 400. With newer sensors (D7200, D500) you can easily set ISO to 2500 or higher and get clean shots. As MT stated, there are many other improvements, but this is one of the most obvious.

Made the same decision a few months ago. As stated above if not shooting high speed motion, or if not a pro, then the 7200 will do everything you need. Because of my subjects and style of shooting, I use the pop up flash a lot for fill, so that was a factor. Since I'm not a pro, the extra $1000 was also a factor.
You won't regret either one.

I am going the other direction on my answer. I did not buy the D7200 cause it did not have GROUP AUTO FOCUS. The D500 does and it also has the same focusing system and operating engine of the D5. Plus the D500 is far better in low light than the D7200, blows it away as a matter of fact. I shoot wildlife, so I love the 10 fps of the D500. In group auto focus you pick one focus spot and Nikon puts four more around that spot. I use the center spot. In group auto focus you put your spot on the moving subject and it ignores the background and keeps the subject in focus. Nikon D610, D810, D750, D500, D4s, and D5 all have group auto focus. For me with sports it was a deal breaker plus the D500 shares it's guts with the D5 for $4500.00 less. I think the Df also has group auto focus cause it's guts come from the D4s.

Considering the price difference and the features, if I were in your position, I would get the D7200. I like the pop-up flash and the two card SD slots

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.
