I'm going to fail answering your question and say spend the money on good glass. You didn't say what lens you were using so if you don't already have it, look at the 70-200 2.8

I apologize for my answer as I know some folks hate it when a person asks "what camera" and some guy says get something completely different...

I'd stick with the 7D MK II. Over the years, I have had a 5D MK III, full frame as well as several crop cameras. In my opinion, I'm sticking with the crops because although the full frame can get more in the frame (obviously), I am comfortable using wide angle lenses and the cost of the lens are much lower, which is important to someone who is retired. Good luck!

7D MII is the best of your choices for action shots like sports.
For a lens It is really hard to beat the 100-400 MII. Fast focus and sharp.
If in really low light and can get real close to the action the 70-200 f2.8 will work in a pinch. Otherwise the 100-400 is much more versatile and focuses much closer.

Agree!!! But note, the 100-400mm is a lot heavier than the 70-200MM. If that much weight presents an issue...... These are both L grade glass and not cheap. I think I paid about $2,100 for the big boy but what a fine piece of glass as Architect also notes. and on a 7d with a 1.5 crop factor you have some serious reach. And if you want to see the nose hairs of player stick a 1.4 extender on the big glass.

if you don't have to sell your kids a dynamite setup.

Good Morning Everyone,
I am currently using a Canon Rebel XSi. I am an amateur and I want to stay with Canon and upgrade but do not want to buy "too much" camera. I take primarily sports shots (hockey, basketball, baseball, football, lacrosse, volleyball)but do some still, also. I take indoor and outdoor. I've been looking but so much information overload on each camera. I've looked at EOS 7D MARK II, EOS 6D, EOS 70D, and EOS 80D. The EOS 5DS and EOS-1Dx are out of my price range.
Thank you in advance.

Although I now own a Nikon D500 and Olympus EM1 mark II I did have, and would highly recommend, a Canon 7D mark II and Canon 100 - 400 f4.5/5.6L IS II. The two items were made for each other and I really enjoyed mine. The camera and lens are suited for fast action and birds in flight and the lens has an amazing minimum focusing distance and can readily be used for close ups of insects. You could consider purchasing both items second hand from a reputable dealer.

T5i is a good camera, not too costly, available from Canon as a refurb to reduce cost even more, Bob.

100-400 weighs 57.92 oz with collar and costs 1899.00 and is much stronger built focuses closer, 3.2 feet. or .33x manification (try that with any other 400mm length available) and is sharper per the MTF charts. The 70-200 weighs 52.6 oz, only 5.32 oz less, or about what a MacDonalds quarter pounder weighs. it costs 1,800.00 same price and focuses 3.94' at 200mm with magnification of only .21x
Finally read Lens Rentals teardown of this lens and they say it is over built compared to other lenses.
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/02/canon-100-400-is-l-mk-ii-teardown-best-built-lens-ever/
And you get all this without having to play with degrading converters or wasting time adding and removing them as the action moves around.
And as others have said the 7D MII is built for what you want to do only bested by the 1D series for 4,000 more.

Since your already in a Rebel seriously consider the Rebel T6s. A good alternative to the Rebel is the 80D.

The 7D II is the camera you want for what you do. The lenses will vary with subject matter.

Hello, if you are already shooting with a Canon camera, all you need is the body, and you can continue to use your current lenses. Here is the web site address for the Canon 7D MK II from Canon. https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/dslr/eos-7d-mark-ii That will also give you some options as to accessories that you may like to purchase. I did not check to see if they offered anything in a refurbished system. If they do though, Canon also offers a 1 year warranty on their refurbished systems also. Good Luck, and let us know what you end up with!
