Try Greentoe, you have nothing to lose. The dealers are all authorized Canon retailers and NO grey market.
Put in your price, and see what the counter offer is. I have purchased a lot from them. I set my price, but do not go for their counter offer. Usually I can get the item for less than the first offer if I wait longer.

I bought twice from GreenToe first time was the Nikon D750 with 24-120 f4 saved $260 on purchase. The next purchase was a Nikon D500 saved $125. Both purchases came from authorised US dealers with full warranty registed with Nikon. You can expect to save about 5 persent.

I have used Greentoe with good results. You are actually buying from local camera stores that participate. There have been others who have questioned whether Greentoe is reputable, all said yes. Check it out in in topics. You will save but not as much as advertised.

To get a deal, consider a new or used 5D Mark III...which is still a remarkable camera. Those will be dropping in price now thru next year and beyond. 5DIV way too new for any discount. A year could pass before any discount from MSRP, and even then, it will be a measly amount.
Canon is greedy.

Oh, and Nikon isn't, right?

I'm new to the Hog, though I've been reading posts for several weeks now. WOW have I learned a lot!

One of your blogs mentioned the site Green Toe for making gear purchases. I'd like to upgrade to a Canon 5D4 and had hoped to catch a Christmas sale, but none of the retailers are budging on the price yet and I really don't want to play in the grey market.

Has anyone been successful in making a purchase on Greentoe, and if so, how much were you able to get off retail?

I'm currently shooting a Canon 60d so this will be a quantum leap for me.

A friend of mine recently purchased a Canon 100-400mm mark II lens from them and got 10% off retail and no tax, free shipping on a US model. The deal worked out great. I knew she was looking for this lens, so I signed up at Greentoe and put in for that lens. They offered it to me for $1799 so I relayed the info to her and she did the same and the next day she got the same deal and bought it.

Wait until after Christmas to buy it, then the retailers are hurting and may be more than willing to deal on the pricing.

Such an exciting purchase ---why take a chance with a questionable retailer?

You don't know how Greentoe works - they work with authorized retailers. Check out their website. In NYC, Adorama is one of the retailers they work with. Several UHH members have gotten gear through Greentoe from Adorama.

you won't get a deal on the newer cameras from Greetoe but if you're smart, you may be able to wangle a deal on lenses. I did. got the 100-400L II and the 24-70 2.8L from them.

It has less to do with the newness of an item than it does to do with a retailer's cashflow. If I were a camera store owner and in anticipation of a run on a Canon 5D Mk IV I took delivery on 20 bodies, and I am still sitting on 8 a month later and they are not moving as fast as I had hoped - I would not hesitate to give up a small amount of profit to ease my cash flow.

I bought a Lens just this week, and saved almost $200 over store prices.

All sounds like great advice. I just checked Canon Price Watch and they have a $3199 street price with a bundled Pixma Pro 100 printer that ends up costing $29 after rebates. That sounds like a great deal.

Combine the comments from Whitewolfowner and Gene51. Waiting until after Christmas may be my best bet. I would imagine that the retailers will hold prices as firm as possible until the buying frenzy is over, and then like Gene51 says; got to dump the inventory and move on.

Thanks to all for being so welcoming and encouraging. This is my first forum experience and it has been great! I have lots of other questions and will try to search appropriately before re-asking those things already discussed. I've already learned a lot from you pros and I look forward to our next conversation.

I have actual experience with Greentoe. I recently bought the Canon 5D Mark IV from Greentoe. It was not Grey market and did come from a reputable US retailer. I was surprised that the retailer was one I regularly use out of NY. This is a sweet camera and I shoot professionally so am very picky with who I do business with. Savings was surprisingly good and quite unexpected. Point is negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. You can get the price down regardless of some of the comments you read here.

My purchase through Greentoe was with Adorama and they did deal. The product was exactly as advertised. "Not Grey market, came from a US retailer". I register all my Canon gear with Canon Professional Service. And this gear registered without a hitch.

You do have to know how to negotiate though. Some people are very good at it and others haven't got a clue to how to do it. And don't think for a second that these big sellers are not aware of that fact and can quickly detect who they are negotiating with. Also, add in the factor that negotiating is a game too. I'll never forget when I was in Mexico years ago and I was negotiating a price for a sombrero with some woman at a street stand. I was actually more than willing to pay more than twice what I ended up paying her but our negotiating quickly gathered a crowd that we entertained them for about 10-15 minutes. She was enjoying it so much, she just kept it going. When it was all over and I bought it from her, I went back to offer her a fair price for it and she wouldn't take it. A friend of hers explained to me that she said she hadn't had that much fun in years and it was worth it to her to even have given it to me.

You have a good point. With Greentoe you negotiate with them. I started with a close to fair price and countered their offer. Though the counter was not accepted they countered with a close offer and I took it. I did not pay sales tax and had a savings of $400.00 off the mfg retail price. I am normally very sensitive to great deals because they are far and few between, but this experience sold me on Greentoe.
