what are you shooting with I use bbf on my D800 and think it is great but as someone here said it does take a bit of getting used to.

I use it and will not be going back to the shutter button focusing. After a little practice it became second nature to me. Try it for awhile before you give up on it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I agree.

My problem with the shutter focus was that it would trip before it was focused (my ham-handed fingers, I guess). With bbf no unexpected trips!

I take thousands of football action shots on the field. I used BBF many times but found the action, distance and framing changes so fast I would be constantly pressing the BBF. The new cameras have internal focus program settings designed to follow action, catch sudden zigs and zags and action just coming into the frame which are so much faster than manual. I recently went to the Canon 1dx which can fire 14 shots per second and there is no way I could possibly BBF that fast. At a recent game in Giants stadium I used a Nikon D810, usually use for portraits and travel shots not sports, with a 500 mm zoom and found the auto focus was slow until I re-set the focus program and was then able to get those fast action shots. The BBF would have worked as I was not taking high speed action but singles. I think the camera is way faster and adjusts much more quickly than any human at this point. Older cameras might be better to use the BBF. BTW I always use shutter priority, 800-1000+) for sports unless I'm trying to get a certain effect and the newer cameras are designed to set the ISO for low stadium lighting.

I use BBF with AI Servo most of the time on my 1D Mk III and my 1Dx MkII bodies. I don't understand when you say you can't push the BBF button fast enough. I just hold the BBF button down and with AI Servo it continues to focus as long as I hold the button down. I generally am using Shutter Priority too. The exposure is calculated on the half push of the shutter button or if shooting a burst as theshutter is held down.

Now that's a thought. I don't use BBF for the same reason you state.

On my Nikon, the Pv button sits right under the middle finger of my right hand ... couldn't be any easier.

The Fn button sits right under my pinky finger ... use that for AE lock.

I learned about BBF a number of years ago. Several professional photographers at workshops have used it forever. To me it makes so much sense getting the focus control where you have total control. Most of my photography is landscape and nature where I use a single point of focus. As they say you can set it and forget it then recompose all you want and maintain focus. I find having it on the shutter release crude and unreliable. Also I usually use a tripod and shutter release cable and don't use the manual button. Also you can set your focus for continuous and hold the BBF button down for moving objects.

Keep at it! Soon it'll become second nature and you will thank yourself.

Keep in mind that if you shoot RAW when you put your camera on auto some switch to JPEG.

I love using BBF too, but I've discovered that if I'm handing the camera off to someone who isn't used to using it the way I have things set up, I just switch it to the "green box" Auto mode so BBF isn't activated. Works on my 7d mk ii

Very good idea.

I believe that by choosing the program mode everything reverts back to a point and shoot scenario with the AF handled by the shutter. At least it does on mine. That makes things simple, switch to program and hand your camera off, on return, put it back on manual or whatever mode you normally shoot with.

At first I gave it up after several days than gave it another chance several weeks later. Now love this feature.

Many professionals and enthousiasts rave about it and I can understand its merits. However, I don't like it. This is a very individual thing. Regardless, give yourself a few weeks to adjust.
