The D3200 is no slouch when it comes to shooting the photos you want. Even with the kit lens, you can do outstanding photography. "Focus" on your style, composition and lighting, as well as the art of managing your photos in Elements or some other user friendly computer program. You may find that you already have all the equipment you need to make money with your camera!

Jessica, as many have already pointed out, your D3200 is an excellent camera. I use one and enlarge my photos to 11x14 (sometimes larger) without any problems. One of the things you will want to eventually learn is off camera flash; that is what will take your portrait photography to a professional level even while using a D3200!

Jessica, I recommend you take some business course before you worry about upgrading your camera.

Wow! Tough to answer. The glass is the most important item. Some will tell you a 70-200 and some will tell you an 85 fixed lens. I like the D810 and 70-200 for portrait work and sometimes the 105G. I own many lenses but an 85 is not one of them. Recently, I used a D500 and a 24-120 and was quite surprised at how well these two worked together. I think for portraits a key element is a good tripod. Using a tripod is a good habit to develop regardless of the camera you are using. Become a student of light and shadows. Natural and artificial. Good luck.

An example of a shot my wife took last summer. She used her D3200 and the 55-300 kit lens. Minimal post processing. The D3200 is a Very capable camera. Learn the settings.

Think Cameras- a pro always has a back up for every piece of equipment owned. If one camera, lens or flash fails during a paid job you can't quit- you have to produce the finished product. That is what being a Pro means. And don't think you won't be in court if you fail to produce on a once in a lifetime event you are hired to capture. I don't mean to scare you, but there are realities to being a Professional Photographer.

Keep your camera.

Stop dreaming about buying things and shoot, shoot, shoot.

The key to improving isn't the next purchase, but practice.

Have to agree with this. It isn't Canon or Nikon....it's all about you.

Thanks for your input and yes I have a degree in business, I was asking about cameras in which I wanted an opinion about what some other of the photographers use.
