Had another shoot with the jumpers before I release them. Didn't get that killer shot I was hoping for.. Straight out of camera, only cropped...
Very good shots though...
These are great. I can never get mine to look this good.
Excellent shots! That is one handsome fellow!
Here's looking at you!!! These are all such amazing shots!!!
Wonderfully beautiful shots of a real cutie.
A beautiful thing. Is that lichen amongst this spider? I can see the advantage of using that to maybe get them to hold still, 'cause they sure don't do that much!

Hey Mark, yes a clumping lichen I find here locally. Sometimes they will try to hide down inside of the plant and I can still get a shot. In this shoot I still only had a few seconds or so to nail the shot. I was hoping for a good series of hand held stacks but no go on that. It's funny how they act.. Doesn't matter if they are well fed, hungry, day, night, ect.. Either they settle down and you get a shot or not. Some shoots are great, others just keep me hungry for more.. Like all photography, unless you in it, no chance of getting that Great shot. Like everything else, you have to put the time in, nothing comes free. Shooting live subjects keeps it not only interesting/challenging, but rewarding when you on occasion, pull that diamond from the rough. . Man, did I ever get off the subject.

love that peach jumper
Hi Tom, Yeah, she's a real cutie. Found a solid peach colored Phidippus regius last year. This one is floating between peach, red and orange. To the untrained eye she looks PhotoShopped. The photos I posted a couple of days ago of this one looked almost fake, so I thought I would post this series straight from camera. What you see is what you get. Beautiful color in these jumpers.
If these were stuffed toys, you could sell them!

No worries! I love this stuff. Jumpers are challenging. For large ones I will often have a go at shooting them in the field since they are a teeny bit calmer. But for smaller ones I just bring them in and stage the shot. I don't think I have come across a small one that will put up with me in the field. But even in staged shots it is still an occasion for patience and a sense of humor because they always want to face away from the camera, and so on.
An old trick for active critters is to closely contain them in a situation that you want, and let them calm down for several minutes or longer. Then calmly, slowly, move in to start taking pictures. But with these little guys they seem to know my desires and start acting up right away. But the challenge is what keeps me coming back.
Then there are tiger beetles.... Don't even get me started.
Nice shots, Martin, you nailed them as usual.
They look pretty killer to me
