Thank you boys for the compassion. Maybe if I fell off the latter she would understand.
Just tell her you feel a little off-balance on the ladder....
When all the children left home, I figured my light hanging time was over. Now I just enjoy neighbor's Christmas displays and am happy to enjoy the wife's interior decorating. Sorry if that seems a long time to wait.
I guess I'm in the minority here. Still decorate the outside with lights and Santa's sleigh. Also, a large manger scene. So far no problem with ladder work, though that's probably a result of 35+ years doing AC work on a lot of rooftops. Christmas Day is spent watching grandkids (21, 18, 17, & 16 ) open presents. Gets better every year!

Is there an age time where you don't have to put Christmas decorations on the house. My wife goes all out on decorating in and out side the house. Now don't get me wrong I like decorating but not after you've just had Turkey and all the Thanksgiving junk is still up. Just wondering when is enough is enough. I perfectly happy with a pot of poinsettias on the porch with lights on it.
You don't "have" to decorate in the first place. It's purely a personal decision. I don't decorate at all, but my wife likes to decorate. So I just say those 2 magic words---yes dear. Rule #1 Don't fight battles you can't win.
If you love her, indulge her. Being single now, I regret not supporting all of her holiday obsessions, though they seemed over done to me. I would do it differently if I had a second chance because I love her still.
I like the decorations (I'm a wife.) My husband has been in charge of decorating the tree for the last several years. This year there won't be much in the way of decorations. Why? 1. It will be just us and my father here for Christmas dinner. 2. My husband is having cataract surgery on Tuesday but he still will have the cataract in his right eye by Christmas. 3. The tree is stored in the attic which requires the 10 foot ladder to access. 4. I'm afraid of heights so I don't go in the attic.
# 5. The big reason - we have two new kittens who will be 6 months old soon and they're still trying to get to the top of every piece of furniture in the house, then bounce to other high places - and - they like shiny objects.

Cats love Christmas trees.
We have four crates of ornaments, acquired over 30+ years, but my campaign to downsize has always fell flat. Sigh.

If you have grown children, you could always ask them to take their 3 favorite ones for their trees. Also, gift each grandchild with one of your ornaments each Christmas. It's a way to shrink your load (if the wife will agree and she just might since it's for the youngsters.)
Jerryc41,
I hate to tell you this, but the Katz I know don't like Christmas trees.

To John F: We had the same problem a few years ago, years and years of accumulated decorations. But when I was ready to get started and went to dig everything out a bunch of stuff I took down and put away the year before was missing! Searched all over, attic, basement, garage...nowhere to be found! Guess it's possible that it somehow went out with the trash or maybe I just forgot where I put it. My guess is it'll just be one of those life events we'll never figure out.
To Dannj. And then when looking for sonething else all those boxes will magically appear before your unbelieving eyes. And then the fun begins.
One of our problems is that some of the collection are family hand-me-downs with a history like "Aunt Bessie so loved that ornament." Another part of the problem is that some have so much history that we dare not hang them for fear of damaging them - think rampaging grandkids - so we have to have ordinaries to hang in their place. Sigh.

My wife loves to decorate, I comply. I believe until I can't move we will decorate.
She likes all 4 sides decorated. This year we had an audience outside waiting to see the house lit last night with out of town relatives.
Does that mean we can stop any anytime of year or just now. lol Really nice job!, glad I did not have to do all of that. For me a couple wreaths and a few spot lights and I am done. This year I do have my dad's 6' tall wood Santa to put up with a light on it also.

Summer is a great time. My wife does an excellent BBQ in the back yard.
Just give us a heads up.
Here is the back yard. I built everything you see by myself. The pool was already in the ground with the coping. I laid the cobble stones and built the gazebo and everything else.
We did this to be able to invite neighbors and acquaintances to have a good time as there is poverty here and many kids do not have such things and come with their parents for a day of fun and memories. We provide everything for the visitors. This is why we do the house at Christmas as the city and area expect it now and children and parents come by to get into the Christmas spirit.

We don't do Thanksgiving decorations.
For 37 years of marriage now, our Christmas decorations have mainly consisted of things hung on a fresh-cut tree. Our first year we strung popcorn and cranberries; over time we have accumulated plenty of ornaments, but we've been more careful the past 13 years since felines came to share our house. We have never done anything outdoors.
