Thanks for the warning, the reviews were hilarious, I laughed so hard that it brought tears to my eyes.

Sugars as a chemical class have names ending in 'ose' as in sucrose - common sugar.
Some sugars such as lactose (milk sugar) are not well tolerated by some people, causing diarrhea.
Sugar alcohols, with names ending in 'ol', including sorbitol and mannitol, are less sweet but also less calories. This property leads to their usage as an additive in 'foods.'
They are less digested via the stomach but further digested in the small intestine by bacteria (bacteria are very normal in the intestine, both beneficial and some not so). Depending on one's bacterial populations and byproduct tolerances, the sugar alcohols there become weapons of mess destruction.
The effects are usually dosage related. So some people are very sensitive, some tolerant of moderate quantities, and some people - watch out!
Go ahead and experiment, but only close to home.

To be in the safe side , forget about sugar free stuff. Natural sugar will never damage you as most of the food mother nature offer us without mankind manipulation.
Just be moderate in your intake...

And then there is "it tastes like butter" made by a chemist. A Doctor at the VA told me 20 years ago to avoid margarine, At that time it was all hydrogenated vegetable oil, now called transfat. (poison) Even today I can not understand why people buy that crap.

Once I bought a small pack of sugar free candy and lucky I was home when I ate it.......cleaned me out. Just as good as the stuff they give for colostomy.

I carefully read the ingredient list and note the artifical sweetener (as a diabetic sugar is out), if it is not sucralose (used in Splenda) then no buy. Sucralose has the sugar molecule with some -OH radicals replaced by chlorine. This changes causes the small intestine to ineffectually breakdown the molecule and pass most of it to the colon.

Sorbitol is used as a sweetener in many low calories products. It is also used in laxatives. Understand why I said "Beware" in my title? I never intentionally buy diet food, but I bought some granola-type bars that said they were low calorie. Big mistake! The box is gone, but I'm sure they contained Sorbitol.

The only sugar substitute that is safe is Stevia. Stevia comes from a plant and is natural; all others are chemicals made in a lab and pure poison. A diabetic is better using sugar than these chemicals and I personally believe all these chemical additives (poisons) are not only the cause of diabetes but other health problems that all of us elderly are experiencing that only a generation or two ago did not exist in society so rapidly as it is today. GMO's and gluten are just as guilty. Want America to get healthy again and rid us of the severe healthcare crisis we have, get the government to wake up and outlaw the poisoning the food industry is doing to us.

as a side note about sugar alcohols:
Dog owners may fear sorbitol because it sounds similar to xylitol. Like sorbitol, xylitol is a sugar substitute; unlike sorbitol, xylitol is incredibly toxic to dogs. In humans, xylitol works similarly to sorbitol, but a dog's body does not distinguish between xylitol and sucrose. It is deadly and is being used not only in chewing gum and candy but some sugarless peanut butters as well.

No problems here. I use all sweeteners except aspartame. I particularly like Stevia and Agave.

I looked up agave and this is the first line Wikipedia had about it and I needed to go no further:

Agave nectar (more accurately called agave syrup) is a sweetener commercially produced from several species of agave, including Agave tequilana (blue agave) and Agave salmiana.[1][2] Agave syrup is sweeter than honey and tends to be less viscous. Most agave syrup comes from Mexico and South Africa.

Agave syrup has been marketed as a "healthful" sweetener, but this fact has been the subject of criticism due to its very high fructose content (which is even more than high fructose corn syrup in its fructose content by weight) and its potential to lead to insulin resistance and significantly increased triglyceride levels (a risk factor for heart disease).[3][4]

And I'll top that off by saying that high fructose corn syrup is one of the worst things you put in your body; it's sugar on steroids.

Agave syrup is terrible!

I ate some sugar free breath mints with sorbitol. No diarrhea but man did I have gas. I had the walking farts. Sounded like a motorcycle.

Barbital is a barbiturate, Phenobarbital, not a shaving cream/soap! No, I don't shave, no I don't use Barbasol.
