Decent Point n Shoot

I am in the market for a decent point and shoot camera. I have searched the topic, and read numerous comments, and every time I find a camera I think might fit the bill, I go to B&H or Adorama, just to find out it has been discontinued. I have a chance to get a used Sony Cyber-Shot RX100II (for around $400.00). Does anyone shoot with that camera, and would like to give me his/her opinion of it? Also, is that a fair price for a used camera, it is coming from a reputable dealer. I have read numerous reviews on oit, but I would rather trust a Hog user for a recommendation.

The rx100 II is better than just a decent point & shoot with it's 1'' sensor and tilting LCD. You can do a lot worse. I've never shot with one but I know their one of the better advanced point & shoot cameras on the market. And yes, I think $400.00 is a good price.

I didn't have quite that much to spend, but after a good bit of research I just bought a LUMIX Z-40 (used & possibly discontinued) for $245.00. The deciding factor for me was that I absolutely insisted on a viewfinder. I am an old boater, and out on the water on a bright day (even cloudy) you can't even see any of the LCD screens I've tried. That was choice, with your budget you probably have fat more options...but I am VERY happy with my decision so far.

Well, I took the plunge, I bought the Sony RX100II. My photography expectations and desires have changed, and old age has set in. I have been shooting with a Nikon D610, and lenses Nikon 24-120 mm, and the Nikkor 200-500 mm. But, that combination, although a dynamic combination, is just too heavy for me now. So, I am going to sell that combo! If you are interested, send me a message. All equipment is in pristine condition.

Here's what that camera has sold for on ebay. You can probably do better than $400.

I had the RX100 III and IV. I sold both of them and went back to my Nikon DSLRs. I didn't like the EVF, the tiny controls, and the Menu system. I preferred the pictures I got with my Nikons. Having said that, these cameras have gotten rave reviews since they were introduced, and thousands of people love them. My compact is now an Olympus Tough TG 860. It doesn't have a viewfinder, but it's waterproof, adjustable, and takes good pictures - for a little over $200.

The used camera market it flooded with great point and shoots. Whichever model is discontinued at B&H or Adorama, you can find second hand for sure.

Hello jradose,

another UHH member (cpeter234) suggested (I believe) that he has the Panasonic Lumix ZS40
I would like to inform you, that you can still get it from Amazon.com - new for $ 219, plus free shipping.
A new model ZS60 with practically the same specs is now about $ 450.
Camera has 18 megapixels, RAW filing, electronic viewfinder, Leitz designed zoom 24mm - 720mm. It is a very compact camera fitting to your shirt pocket.
It's good to shop around, right?

If all you want is a point and shoot camera, why not use your existing cell phone? they take as good a photo as any point and shoot that you will spend hundreds of dollars on.

The Sony rx100MK2 is an amazing choice. Read any review and many are trying hard to copy but have only come close. One reason is the zeiss lens. . Sony has a clear image zoom which is far superior to digital zoom and takes you from 3.7 to 7x which should cover you. It also has digital which takes you to 11x but I turn it off and never use it. Comes with built in flash. Use it on sport scene mode or superior auto mode to capture movement Put it in my jean pocket. I use the Alex White has a great book on the camera so you can learn how to maximize the abundant features. I would suggest 3 accessories. Mega gear uv lens protector. Invisable. Richard franiec grip. Sony semi hard screen protector. You will be amazed at the quality of the images. Once you learn how to use the settings results will rival many bulky DSLRs. My daughter took this camera to her European tour at 15 years old. The photos were better than semi pro cameras which the guide and some students had. They used hers for the yearbook

Interesting question and replies. I bought a used Lumix FZ 70 a few months ago. 16mp, shoots raw & jpeg, 20-1200, 60x zoom auto & manual focus. What am I missing in my $210.00 camera?

It always surprises me that on this photography forum that people will suggest a cell phone???
I have the top of the line cell /smart phone and have some cheap point and shoot cameras - NEVER has any of my phones taken as good a photo as any camera (even the cheap cameras). ESPECIALLY a RX100ii - in my house we call the RX100 the "bad mamma jamma" because the pictures are so amazing in dark situations - or any situations.

A cell phone is fine if you have nothing else with you- of if your under 30 and still addicted to facebook and snapchat. But if you like having good quality photos - then buy a nice camera.

Sorry to rant on this lovely morning - but really? Cell Phone????

Totally agree. So many situations a cell phone cannot deal with effectively. Rx100ii does all very well.
