[quote=tramsey]I went snooping around and found a bunch of d80s on Ebay, s[ecifically one from Hunt's in Mass for $69.99. I've heard of them before and are reliable.

You did him a service by finding this, but he already sold his lens and flash. He is probably very lonely and wanted to vent. It's too bad he has to bad mouth a company that has delivered on it's promise of product lastability, it is too bad. And, it just being vet day he is reaching out for some pats on the back.

Try this company: http://www.cameraservicepro.com/contact-us/
I have used their services twice and found them to be very helpful and very knowledgable.

As stated above it is now too late due to his selling of lens; however, while in Italy in July (second day) my trusty old D80 began giving me an ERR message. Needless to say it was necessary for me to spend a couple weeks with my cell phone camera. Up side was that I found a great deal on a used D7100, what a fantastic camera. I eventually found a repair service on eBay that specialized in my exact problem http://www.ebay.com/itm/REPAIR-SERVICE-for-NIKON-D80-w-Flashing-Error-Message-Err-/282227263155?.

I recommend these folks very highly. For $90 plus cost of shipping to them I now have a perfectly functioning and updated D80 as a backup (set up with a 70-300 so always available at my home for birding). They were great to work with, very knowledgeable, and extremely fast.

Part of the problem is parts. There's no way Nikon can stock every part for every camera forever. The repair, if they could do it, would probably cost more than a refurb D3xxx body. Save some money and move up to a more modern camera.

Yes, Hunt's is a good company. I bought a D750 from them.

Sold my Nikon D300 in mint condition with just under 10K shots privately and got $280, which I was happy to get. The D300 is only worth $300 - $325 in perfect condition.
I did not have $1200 for a new D7200 but bought one privately in like new condition with box and everything with 9725 shots for $730.
Shop around. Try Craigslist, at least you can see the camera BEFORE you buy it. I understand your situation, I have limited funds myself. If you were happy with your Nikon D80 you should be able to replace it for a couple hundred dollars.

While the notion that all digital cameras eventually wear out is probably accurate, the main variable is eventually. I have a 13 year old Canon EOS 10D that still works as good as it did 13 years ago. Granted, I don't use it much anymore but I still pop in a battery and memory card from time to time just to wake it up. Same for my 12 year old 20D and that camera probably has over 50,000 actuation. Of all my xxD cameras, the only one that has ever given me any problems is the 40D, it's main dial occasionally slips but other than that it still works fine.

As for the OP'S D80, he stated it has 9000 actuation, not much for a camera of that age.
While the notion that all digital cameras eventual... (show quote)

And I have two D70s cameras, one that died giving an err error on the compact flash card. I replaced it with a second D70s that I purchased for about $80 from Adorama. It still works fine. However, I also have a D7100, and a D610 so the D70s is really my for my wife and when it dies, we will try to upgrade.

This sounds like a chancer, preying on the goodwill of good people, to ponce a Canon! You may call me cynical!

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the camera for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message.

Thank you for your service.
But, as many others have mentioned, the camera is well out of warranty.
Your negative comment regarding Nikon is both unfortunate and un warranted.

Best wishes.

Then you will be very disappointed with Canon and most old cameras then.
I use Canon and realize my 10D is unrepairable by Canon and likely soon my 7D.
Depending on the problem try KEH or Tempe camera Repair or other independent repair shop, they can perhaps help.

Nikon is a respectable and reliable company. Technology changes continuously and in a few years cameras become obsolete with little interest on the part of the consumer to buy them and obviously with not a good margin of profit for the manufacturer that has decided to keep the camera in the line up. Repairs, as has been already explained to you becomes expensive and parts are usually very hard to find.
Expect a similar behaviour from Canon.
A good solution is to buy a cheap film camera and use film. Be ready also if it needs repairs.

I'm in the same boat. I bought a refurbished camera from Cameta Camera they have a one year warranty on refurbs. Don't be hesitant about buying refurbished or used from a reliable company. Adorama, B&H, KEH, Cameta Camera and of course the dealer we have here on UHH, Camera Cottage in Montana. He goes by MT SHooter here on the forum, his name is Carter. But any reliable company will stand by there return policy.

I'm not an apologist for Nikon, nor a Nikon user, but the 'irreparable' situation may be beyond their control.

Some years ago, I bought a Citizen "America's Cup" watch that had a lot of functions for sailboat starts. After about 15 years it stopped working so I sent it back for repair and got a similar letter; I was very unhappy and called Citizen. They were sympathetic, but said it was irreparable because the Swiss movement was no longer made or available; although I still wasn't happy, I could understand it. As a consolation they did offer me a 30% discount on any watch in their line. Call Nikon, they may offer you something to keep a happy customer.

Good Luck!
