Nikon D5200 vs. D5500

I currently have a Nikon D 5200 and a Nikon18-300mm lens in a brown truck circling Louisville. I sold my 18-70 and 55-300mm locally. The same buyer will buy my D5200, making my net cost to buy a D 5500 $330. Question: is the upgrade to a D 5500 worth it? And, did I make the right move going to an 18-300mm? (I shoot wildlife and grandkids.)

CORRECTION: 18-140mm not 18-70mm. I liked the walk-around aspects of the 18-140mm enough to interest me in the 18-300!!

I have the 18-140 on my d7200 and it's a great walk around lens. The only time I swap is when I need more reach when I'm birding, otherwise, it's on my camera most of the time.

I use the 18-300 as a walk-around on a D7200. No complaints about the pictures.

I do not have the d5200. But I do have the d5100 and just recently bought the d5500. Between the two of them, I think the d5500 is definitely worth the upgrade. I am very pleased with my 5500. One feature that I have come to really enjoy is being able to change nearly all of the settings easily and quickly using the LCD touch screen. A push of a button and the icons for all the settings appear. You simply hit those you want to change. If you only want to change aperture or shutter speed, those settings always show on the screen and you can just hit the arrows left or right to change them instantly. Love that feature.

All you need to do is type (D5200 vs D5500) in the google box and several different sources pop up giving you side by side analysis, some even give a score as to which is the better choice. (snapsort, imageing resource, & camera decision) to name a few. Good luck, whichever you choose.

I like getting new stuff, especially when I can sell the old stuff to compensate for the cost. The D5500 is newer and better, and it will get you more money when you sell it. I love the D750 and have no plans to get the new version when it comes out, but if it has major improvements, I may ot be able to resist.

One year ago during Black Friday, I could have purchased a brand new, body only, D5500 for $500. They were sold out in one day, and no rainchecks. Nikon sets prices for their cameras. Probably why that deal was not extended. The D5500 is an excellent camera, paired with an 18-140mm lens. IQ as good as the D7100. It doesn't have the internal motor as the D7xxx series. Wait for Black Friday. Or check for refurbished.

In short, YES it is. I've had all the D5XXX & D7000 Nikon DSLR's including the D5500. It will be difficult to ever move up from the D5500 as it is so good you just keep improving with it. Once you start using the touch screen to set up and change settings you'll be smiling and fist pumping yes. Use snapsort.com to make a comparison for their facts. I sold my 18-200mm lens as the 18-140mm I had has crisper focus and is quieter. I find I can crop way down and still get a very good image. Try an in store comparison to commit to your lens but remember 24.1mp's can be seriously cropped.

I don't have the 5200, but just bought a 5500 body only for $600. I also have the 3300. I have both the 18-140 lens and a Tamron 16-300. I just got done cropping some pictures I took with the 18-55 and am impressed with the image quality. You won't regret your purchase of the 5500 or the long lens. I won't get rid of my 18-140 as I think the image quality is superb.

No knowing what kind of shooting you specialize in, using one of Jerry's recommendations here are the two camera's compared. I would hazard a guess that only you can decide. And P.S. don't forget the value/fun of GAS in making your decision.

I have had all of the D5xxx series of cameras. They really improves when the 5200 came out. The biggest differences from the 5200 to the 5500 are the processor, the slightly larger screen, slightly less weight, and on the 5500, the touchscreen. I'm still getting used to this and am really starting to love it.
The IQ is not a lot different from the 5200 to the 5500. If you have the cash and would like the touchscreen, then go for it.
The 18-300 is a great walk around lens. Hope you got the newer 6.3 verses the older 5.6. With the light weight of the 5500 it pairs better with the lighter weight and smaller size of the newer model.
