ok,, got a question for right exposure,, Im slowly getting things figured out in right settings for whatever,, problem I encountered lately,,,isif the light meter is set at zero and reading correct light etc for the shot,,, how come sometimes when you take the pic,, its too dark as if the shutter is too fast,,,, still learning but I thought if the meter is set on zero by the factors,, shouldn't that be the correct exposure to take the picture ?? signed,,, confused!

Since you didn't include a photo it's difficult to tell. However at times you could have a brighter background that your subject, that will cause under exposure on your subject. If that's the case I recommend fill flash on your subject.

I've come to the conclusion that many of the through the lens light meters in DSLRs are incorrect too many times. In the old film days the rule was meter off the ground and then take your shot; it worked well. When I'm in full sun and the light meter "suggests" f/16 at 1/15 of a second, I know that something is wrong! I bought an external light meter that I use regularly; since using it my exposures have been spot on (usually disagreeing with the camera meter reading).

There is also the "sunny 16" rule from film days, but I find that that doesn't always work either with DSLRs.

BUT, Photoman, the basic exposure rules of thumb, like the Sunny 16 tipped you off when the in camera meter indicated f16 @ 1/15th that something was wrong. The meter is not a controller. They've gotten SO good that we sometimes forget that every exposure is a decision. And the meter is a guide. Learning to use the different mode; evaluative. partial and spot (a real learning process), will allow the photographer to take maximum advantage of the in camera meter and decide which exposure option works best for the scene and subject at hand.

An exercise that can be executed on a normal photo walk is to bracket all your shots for a "Shoot." Then on viewing with the exposure settings displayed, analyze how -1, 0 and +1 stop exposure affects your photos; in the mid tones like skin, shadows and blacks, and highlights and whites. That's the first step toward using Partial and spot, showing you where the critical spots are for your metering to be. Mr. Google and You tube are your friends. The Adorama Learning Center and B&H's Explora sites are super resources. And while Joe Brody is sponsored and is soft selling Sekonics, his videos are very instructive, too.

I don't use a meter. I take a few test shots and change my settings accordingly. Remember a meter will give the reading that corresponds to the type of shot you will get if shooting auto. A meter doesn't know what you want to be light or dark.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on many factors.
