What? What?
You know what I mean!
Did I get the girl?
(No answer, looking exasperated)

Anyway, I have been trying to convince a 23 yo girl to register and today while knowing it was too late for this election (inscription closed yesterday evening) and well, she had agreed to come with me to the registration office but something came up and well, I DID NOT GET THE GIRL!!! (with me that is).

I still went to office since I had to renew my passport next door. I checked if she could register by mail for the next time and, well, it was an option. So I picked up a form went back to 'girl' place of work (I know her boss so no problem with that), got her to fill the form, took it from her and now it is in my mail box waiting for pick-up.

So, I did get the girl but, well, not the way implied in the title... No excuse for not voting the next time.

Good for you!

I have twins who turn 18 on Sunday. Gotta get 'em down to register with Selective Service (the draft board) next week... They registered to vote last year, and will vote in November, if not sooner.

We're all angry at the choices this time, but we'll vote anyway.

Worst choices in my lifetime, but the responsiblity to participate overrides any other consideration. Congrats on the kids' birthday and having them register to vote. Lets hope they continue a proud American tradition.

Well, I remember Nixon vs McGovern... that was pretty awful. But after watching last night's debate, I don't like either of the two major candidates any more than before. Chris Wallace was the best moderator of the three, though.

Hmmmnn...Chris Wallace - best of the worst, perhaps. Not much credit there, however.

I have 3 suggestions for future debates, two procedural and one for the moderator.

1. ONE live mike - that of the current designated speaker - and controlled by the moderator.

2. If no response from the audience is desired, have NO audience. Candidates can't resist the urge to "play to the live audience" in any case.

3. Ask the candidate the question. If he/she does not answer the question but turns to another topic, go on to the next candidate.
When returning to the first candidate ask the original question, explaining that it was not addressed.
If still not addressed repeat the process.

windshoppe, the only think wrong with your suggestions is that they make sense, so don't hold your breath. The TV ratings for the show would probably drop if they implemented them.

All the candidates I've ever seen would not agree to a debate with those rules. They want to do things just the way they are now doing them, they dont want to be required to answer a question. As bad as the system is, with the current players, it is the best we can hope for. That means it will continue to be almost meaningless. To quote from an old popular song " Nobody's right when everybody's wrong".

I was working shifts and going to school during that time... I missed those debates, but remember the anger then, it was about as strong as it is now. People werent as plentiful then, so we werent as crowded, meaning the underlying stress levels werent quite so high as now. That makes a difference, plus, the things that have happened since has changed the way people view and interpret their world.

bookman & chazz4623:

You are both, of course, totally correct. My "suggestions" were made mainly to point out the absurdity of the debates as they are currently conducted. Regrettably, the American people can expect no better in the future.

This is not a political debate thread or how to run a political debate.

If this is what it is going to turn into I will request a transfer to the 'attic'.

This is about 'get folks to vote' not about get to vote for or against.

And such is the state of affairs in today's world. Your suggestion was excellent tho, something that we cant achieve in the world of politics. So much could be better if the word compromise were removed from the list of no-no words. lol
