I have used PPSOP and have found them to be very good. They also offer free short videos on various photo topics.

How long have you been taking your classes at NYIP? I know that they have updated their information/books. What is your student teachers name? Just in case I do this and I get the same one. LOL I am really thinking about doing this. I also read a lot on here and have learned so much. I also am starting to go on you tube. I haven't had time though to really sit down and watch them just yet. But all I can really think about and want to read about is taking pics and photography. I know, I got it BAD!!! Thanks for sharing. I appreciate anyone that has advice on anything they are willing to share with me. You are never to old to learn. :-)

Go to the Ken Rockwell site. Go through all his articals. PUt them to use. Then if you think you need more go t U-Tube as stated before. YOu can also get a begenning film photograph book at a used bbo store online or brick. after you do all this if you think you need more then look for a school. Dave

I am a Nikon shooter too, and I get lots of tips from Kelby TV, I think it is called DTown. And I also subscribe to Kelby Training... which has excellent training on everything from lighting to landscape photography, lenses, etc. You could also follow professional photographers like Ian Plant or Joseph Rossbach who have interesting blogs. THey also do workshops in places all over the country, varying from one or two days to 4 or 5... and in price as low as $300 or $400. Check it out... and good shooting.

Thanks for posting the tip. I went to the DTown site and will be going there quite often. I always seem to find learning by watching a lot easier than reading things. Especially when it comes to technical stuff.

Can't give an opinion at this point because I am adjusting my thought process to theirs. At 62 I find it hard to be as open minded as I was at 22 and have too many opinions of how something should be done. Since I haven't a clue of how to teach a photographic course like I am taking, I have to open up an old file cabinet and make room for new information.

can any one recommend an online photography school. is new york a good one? please help. thanks

Good Morning Omnila --

I too am taking the New York Institute of Photography course. Here's how it works: After signing up for the course, you receive, in the mail, a package -- which took about 10 days to arrive -- with 8 CD's and 4 text "magazines" instead of large heavy books. I put in the first CD, listened, was told to read pages 4 - 24, then turn the CD back on. A discussion followed as to what I just read. When I'm done listening to all the CD's and reading all the text magazines for Unit 1, I will do my photo assignment and mail in -- not email -- actual photos, which will be critiqued and mailed back to me with an audio CD that I can listen to. I will be notified by email when the critique is available and I will be able to hear my instructor's feedback immediately as well as receiving the CD in mail. Then I will receive Unit 2 and the process starts all over.

I'm really pleased with NYIP's program.

Hope this helps.

There are lots of programs out there. When I first started taking photography seriously a “pro” friend told me to just start shooting lots, all the time, and pay attention to the results. He said I would quickly learn what worked or not if I paid attention. He also said I could use my time better studying what others seemed to think worked or not in magazines and books, then to still do what I liked the best. Didn’t cost me much (other than film which is a non -issue now) and it certainly turned out to be great advise.

I too am taking the course from NYIP, very good course,I am not a pro just a guy hoping to get better with my camera, if you can not afford the course and a lot of us really can't, right where you are at is a good place to learn, I have learned alot here on this web site, and as others have said there are a lot of free sites ( and free is a price that is hard to beat)

Another idea for a free course is to read ever thing on this site that is worth a crap and is of some real use, and there is a lot on here worth reading. Then down load and print it out. and put it in your lesson note book.please please keep up with who was kind enouth to put it on the web site, so should it need to be you can give them credit ( or blame ) and as some one else said keep notes of what works best for you, even the NYIP school of photoggraphy sends you a note book that will fit in your pocket or purse for just that reason.
