I am very fortunate to have a friend who buys a large quantity of Canon regular printer paper and every time she gets a new shipment, Canon sends her a bunch of photo paper samples. Over time she has accumulated at least two grocery bags full of packaged, boxed, brand new photo paper and gives it to me. Unfortunately, I have a HP printer and the ink smears on the Canon paper, not all but some anyway.

So I need a relatively inexpensive, yet decent photo printer for canon paper. Anybody got a suggestion? I looked at reviews on Amazon for the model 7220, I think it was and that seemed okay for give away photos. Don't want to spend much but it is a shame to have all that paper sitting around going unused.

p.s. I'd pass some of it along for nothing but it would cost me to ship it and it is heavy stuff...

I'm surprised that one brand of printer papers smears on another brand of printer. I once tried plotter paper in a printer, and that smeared, but the paper was made for plotter ink, so that's understandable. Your experience shows the importance of matching paper to printer.

Finding a good Canon printer to use that free paper should be easy, especially for "giveaways." That 7220 got only two out of five stars on Canon's own web site.

Does the ink ever dry on that Canon paper?

Jerry, my experience was no, never did dry. When I print photos they are 6x4 because I like to go back and look at photos in a book rather than pging through all the saved prints. I naturally only print the better prints just like I post. When I get to it I print from 2 to 10 photos and when I was having the problem I mentioned the photos got stuck together so they were trash. When I got the response from HP I could not believe the lack of concern.

go to QVC; while they are not always the cheapest on items, they had the Canon MX922 on sale for $69.95, with free shipping, $30 cheaper than any Amazon price; great unit; I use generic inks - highly recommend this unit; special may have been the one day only although I have seen it featured several times.

Seriously, this printer is one of Canons best consumer printers and you can have it for a song after rebate.

You can even find it for less on Craigslist because many people have found deals that gets the printer free after rebate when purchasing a camera kit and the printer at the same time. That's how I got one of mine. This one is wireless and uses 9 printer cartridges. (I think it's 9) You can print up to 19x13 and get stunning results. I buy 3rd party ink for a song compared to the price of OEM. A set of OEM is about $125 but you can get 3rd party sets for less than $30. I bought a set from Canon for the price of $124.99 but like the friend that gave all that paper to you, they (Canon), included $640 of absolutely free paper with my purchase. They have done this for the past 2 years that I know of.

What 3rd party ink do you use? I am thinking of getting this printer but the cost of ink is on the high side for me....Rich

You really can't go wrong with a Canon Pixma Pro 100 for $129.00. It's a great printer and if you are really serious about printing photos you nee a printer with at least 6 inks. The Pro 100 has 8 as mentioned earlier. If you are concerned about ink cost there are alternatives including refilling your own with inks that are comparable to the OEM inks. Many of us here on UHH have this printer and are very pleased with the results both in color and black and white.

Truthfully, I demo Canon printers w various papers & thought they might all be same. Surface pourous to accept dye inks, but water surface tension prevents wetting. Hmmm
If you only need 8.5x11 or smaller, I'd suggest bulky Fax MX922 which can also print label directky on CDs. Pro ver. require pur. more ink colors & not as easy to locate. Some older ver. can print from slides. New 7720 uses newer ink tank, but only improvement is NFC.

I've been printing with Canon Pixma for several years and never bought Canon paper and I get good results. Are you sure it's the paper causing the problem?

I had this experience just ONCE with my Canon Pro-100. Turns-out that I loaded the paper upside-down, so the ink hit the plastic-coated backside, and could not be absorbed into the paper. Smeared terribly!

I use LD Product cartridges for my 8-cartridge Canon Pro-100: http://www.ldproducts.com/Canon/Ink-Cartridge/PIXMA/PRO-100/8488-Printer.html

I always had problems with HP printers, then I discovered Canon on a package deal for cheap and have never looked back. I own 3 Canon printers now and get consistent results from several cameras across the board. All my computer screens are calibrated with Spyder 5.

Wish I had known about the QVC deal 3 days ago! Was going to get the 7220 and opted for a mx922. I would have gone for the pro 100 but I use Linux and could not find drivers for the pro 100. The 7220 was 79 and the mx922 was 89 at amazon and is a newer version with more funtions. Will let every one know what I think of it when it arises and I get some prints out of it.

Good luck! Linux does have it's limitations, as does every other OS. Swings and roundabouts as they used to say. Drivers can be found for many things, Windows, Mac, Linux etc., but you do sometimes have to do a little research.
