i find snaps like this almost hopeless to say anything good about them , put it this way , if you came across this pic in a photo mag, or any mag, how long would you look at it . i would give it a two second look then turn the page , a five min look would be a good pic, a couple i have looked at for 30 min in one setting , then looked at them again for the same time . but only found two worthy of that , you could do that also . get a mag, any mag and see how long you study each picture , the bad ones you will flip page in two or three min , once you know how to look at it .i do
not look for leading lines thirds . i just take in the whole pic and i know in 3 sec if i like it or not ,

This photo is a nice memory of your vacation, the water, the gulls, the sound of the waves, etc. I would have experimented more on the focus on the gull. As it is, nothing in the photo is really in a good focus.. so there is nothing for the eye to really go to. There could be some improvements in composition but I think playing with getting a good focus would be a start in improving it.

As difficult as it is to hear that your "great shot" is not "great art", that's where this shot is. I think all of my photos go into two categories, "I was there" and "great art". Of 40,000 photos only less than 100 are "great art". Sort of the same with this one.

Composition wise I like to see the sea gull flying into the picture and not in the middle. Also this would help the rule of thirds. I will post the camera data. Your camera can be set with ISO 800, 1600, 3200. It's not like the old film days. 1/1000 shutter speed should be OK, but the f stop aperture could be set to f 11 and have better focus. Good luck. David

You have created a record of a pleasant experience. The photo isn't perfect - very few posted here are - but every photo that you take improves your skills. Something that you may find helpful is to look at the EXIF data for photos here like the ones that you want to take. That will prepare you for when the situation occurs.

And a suggestion: don't be bothered by destructive criticism from other posters, especially the ones that have never posted their own work.

Been to Gold Beach many times, one time I came home with 35 rolls of film to process. A great place to take pics up and down the coast from there, day trips. A place not overrun with people anytime of year. Piss on bram boy's opinion, (heavy on the boy). Everyone has to start somewhere and believe me everyone takes clinkers. Give lot's of encouragement and after all if you like the photo that is all that matters. Keep on shooting. I have lots of photos from there and even if they are not National Geographic acceptable they still bring back los of memories.
