Why I Don't Travel

This is the kind of thing that would happen to my family and myself. We seem to thrive on a warped sense of humor and the biggest problems become the best stories. This story should live on in the family for years to come--it will get better as the years go by. Remember, it only hurst when it's happening.

Agreed! Even being on Parris Island was enjoyable. This time 😜

I've done lots of traveling by car, train, plane, and ship. I've had enough. Now I limit my trips to sightseeing on TV and short local trips.

A friend and her sister drove from NY to VA yesterday to visit relatives and see a Von Trapp Family concert. Here's what happened -

A rock hit the rental car window, huge crack.

They stopped for gas but couldn't find the release for the gas-filler door. While they were at the pump, a man had a heart attack. EMTs arrived and worked on him for half an hour then took him away. His wife was very upset.

An accident shut down I-95 south 30 miles before the Chesapeake Bay, so they had to detour and lose a lot of time. Her sister developed a migraine, so my friend had to take over the driving. Driving through DC was not the best part of her trip.

When they finally arrived at the hotel and checked into their room, they found that it was already occupied. They got a room upgrade. Another nice feature of the trip, it was 97 and humid.

I look forward to hearing what went wrong at the concert.

Where I come from, Jerry, that is called LIFE. It happens all the time. The good points to remember are that it was a rental car and not their car, the rock at the windshield did not cause them to have an accident. Obviously the gas tank door release was found or they would still be at the gas station. Neither one of them had a heart attack so that is a plus. They were not involved in the accident on I-95, another plus. Driving through any part of the country in heavy traffic is not a plus but apparently they were not deterred. Most likely a clerical error about the hotel room but they ended up getting a better room because of the error. It sounds to me as if they should have had a great trip all in all.

Let the adventures continue,

Dennis

We just did a 7600 mile, 24 state trip from CA. Saw the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, Gettysburg, had hot fudge sundaes for breakfast at Hershey's chocolate world, Philadelphia, Wash. DC, Kitty Hawk NC, Orlando (Disney World), New Orleans, Texas Gulf Coast, San Antonio, and topped it off with a dome train ride to the Grand Canyon where we spent the night. I sot close to 2000 pics on the trip. Had a blast. Over the past three years we've RV'd through 35 states. There's been a few problems along the way, but what the hey...it's all part of the trip. Next year we're taking a cruise to Alaska out of Seattle. One of my photo bucket list items is to photograph the American Bald Eagle....

I'm 82 and have seen much the world (every continent except Antarctica) Apart from our age, my wife and I have given up traveling because flying, once a pleasure, is now an ordeal. At the airport and on the aircraft. There also is the threat of terrorism anywhere. I watched the coverage of the recent attack in Nice with interest. A few months earlier I had walked along that same street.
I'm thankful I had the chance to travel so much in the era when you looked forward rather than dreaded going to the airport.
When is the aviation industry going to recognize that there are many others like us and it has forfeited a sizable part of its market with their mendacious, autocratic and uncaring approach.

Yea, flying is becoming an ordeal. To me the terrorists are the airline companies and TSA. I'm at the point that if I'm going less than 600 miles I'll drive or ride my motorcycle. Over that it depends on time.

Other than that the world is going to hell in a handbasket but it's probably not as bad today than it will be in 10 or 20 years and not as good as it was 10 or 20 years ago so I want to go see it while I still can.

I'm glad you got to see so much of the planet--I'm working on it.

Wow! If it weren't for bad luck, they wouldn't have any luck at all. I hope their trip home is not as exciting. And I hope they have insurance to cover the broken windshield. No doubt the car rental company will want it replaced and your friends will be quite liable for it.

But on the bright side, it was a rental car not theirs, He did not have the heart attack, He did not get stuck IN the bay tunnel and they got an upgrade on the room. It sounds like it could have been much worse.

Things can go off the tracks at home just as quickly. Traveling can also be a great experience.

I'm 71 and do not plan on stopping soon. Traveled the world as a crew chief on C-130E #877 in the mid 1960s, spent 29 years as an over the road semi truck driver; it's impossible to tell you how many sunsets and dawns I've seen from just about anywhere you can name. I have friends and relatives in most parts of the U.S. A couple of those friends date back to our Vietnam days, and it's always a great trip when we get together. Been retired for 10 years now and wife and I take at least 2 long trip per year, long being over 1000 miles. Life time of traveling taught me to be prepared. We drive on our trips (I haven't flown since 1967), and always, always have trusted technicians examine every nut and bolt in and on the pickup, call well in advance for over night lodging (get the name of the person your talking to), use the GPS, and get off the Interstate system as much as you feel comfortable with. Above all, have fun!!!
