When I turn the camera on, the shutter starts tripping on its own, continually and rapidly fire away, and when I turn it off it fires away even faster for about ten seconds before finally stopping. It also starts to fire away if I change the lens, even though it's not turned on. None of the controls work, and the articulartng screen on the back is blank. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, and what it might cost to repair?

You should contact Nikon for information on your problem and the cost of repairing it.

Google Nikon Service and start the process online. Nikon is the only place I would have my cameras serviced.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I've e-mailed a couple of the official Nikon repair centers and am awaiting a response.

The camera needs service. I sent my gear when I have a problem to APS (Authorized Photo Service) in Morton Groove, Illinois. They are authorized Nikon agents and only work with Nikon cameras and lenses. They are very kind and knowledgeable and they used to be the biggest camera repair for Nikon in the NW in the past till they became independent. They can give you an estimate over the phone. The prices are reasonable and the work top notch.

I agree that it clearly needs servicing. However, at the cost of servicing, you might consider simply replacing it. Keh Camera has an Ex+ D5100 for $257. I have a D7100 in the shop now to repair the front lens mount and the cost is $256, so my advice is to determine the cost of repair, but also be clear-eyed in deciding to repair or replace.
