My first squadron out of flight training in the mid 60s was VP 21 flying out of Brunswick, Maine (long closed). Living up the road in Lisbon, I was quite taken with this plant that grew in the spring under the pine trees. Last week, I discovered a bunch of slides that I haven't seen for decades and am scanning the best ones.

I knew the name then, but have long forgotten it.

If seen in the early spring in the Sierras I'd be with Brent, Snow Plant.

Confounding! Beautiful plant. Pine tree parasite. It has no 'roots' and no chlorophyll, but captures a root of a pine and lives off its host. Interestingly, the pine lacks root hairs, and depends on fungi to gather nutrients and water, especially in dry times.

There's no place like Maine. My wife and I have been vacationing there for over 30 years. Got lots of photos in my archives. We will be leavin for there on September 1 for 10 days. Hope to get a lot of pictures. I will put some up after we return.
