There was a post a few days ago mentioning the income tax U.S. Olympic athletes must pay on the value of their medals. Here's an opposing view.

This why I don't even bother with the Olmpics, it's not about pride it's about money. Just like all other sports now.

Just another way for legislataors to claim they are doing something. Crap like this is why our tax code is such a mess.

They ought to focus on their job: like reducing government expenditures and creating an annual budget by Oct. 1.

Get in the surroundings of professional athletes and the conversation isn't the sport they play; how to improve the team but their investments and how they can get their agents to get them more money. That's all they think or care about. Playing a sport is a job and nothing else. Few even car about the sport they play anymore. It's sad and pathetic.

The media loves to carry the water for the athletes. In reality, they're a bunch of pampered pooches who, like our politicians, are separated from the real world. If they had to pay a tax it would be the first time they had to reach in their pockets for anything. Their fans would probably start a web site to raise the money for them. Look at the swimmer debacle. I guess it's OK to lie when you're at a certain level. Hell, you could even become President of the United States if you've perfected it.

Yeah, so much for that great swimming team we will have in the future. The drunken idiots can't even behave themselves in another country when they are ambassadors for us. They think they are still on their college campuses where they are protected to the core and can do whatever they please. The day, colleges start demanding responsible behavior from their athletes is the day this immature behavior may stop. The way they act on and off of campuses is is beyond criminal and the think they can do it anywhere. I'm glad the Brazilian police caught them at their stunt of destruction. Now watch the US government protect them; when they should face the law where they committed their crimes and pay the dues. No wonder Phelps wants to retire and not come back. He has a child and wants to be a father, not end up in jail with these immature spoiled brats.

There are Olympic athletes who don't make millions. Skeet shooter Kim Rhode set a record by winning a medal in her sixth Games, she doesn't have any sponsors and has to rely on donations to pay for her ammunition to keep in training. See http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/rio-2016/2016/08/12/kim-rhode-skeet-shooting/88619694/

Every recent Olympics there have been calls for the athletes not to be taxed on the value of their medals and bonuses, they don't pass and probably won't this time either, especially given the furor over the swimmers.

Mike, I have to take the fifth when it comes to Rhode. My favorite event to watch during the Olympics is Netflix but I'd be surprised if the networks even covered the skeet shoot. However, it brings up another pet peeve of mine and that is athletes going back for 5-6 games. They should be allowed to attend one game and they're done. Four years later bring in new faces. I also think that they should have built permanent sites years ago instead of going around the globe and spending umpteen millions constructing facilities that are left to rot as soon as the games leave.

Some sports are hard to televise, but the TV coverage has been abysmal, I've probably spent more time in the past two weeks watching reruns of Family Feud. The best segment I've seen on the Olympics coverage was a bit on 'The Girl from Ipanema', and it had nothing to do with sports.

She is in a shooting sport, openly defends the second amendment (so she is true American) in today's liberal crap, you wonder why she has no sponsors? It nothing more than the testimony of the tyrannic rule from Washington!

Right. And what about the poor people who win things? These Olympic athletes are generally not hurting for money. You can't exclude just one group from paying taxes.

For the first time ever, I avoided the Olympics. My disgust began with the fiasco of Rio "buying" the rights to the games. Then there was the continuous talk of athletes and drugs and the formerly banned athletes being allowed to compete. No more Olympics for me. I have TiVo, Netflix, and YouTube, in addition to DVDs. Never a dull moment.

I agree, one game and then go out and get a job, a real job. I also agree on one permament site, what a waste of money when people are starving all around the world.

He claims that weed is the key to his success - makes no secret of it.
