I haven't seen any posts lately about the Nikon P900. I know several people bought that model. Any comments on the camera and its long zoom?

Jerry,

I've had a P900 for a year or so. I like the camera and its features but can't hold it still enough on full zoom. I zoom but not into the extended digital zoom. Camera is very good.

I bought mine back in November and I am very pleased with it overall. A few minor issues, such as lens flare and close-up/macro setting only at 24mm. I posted a series of images from the Toledo Zoo just a couple weeks ago, some of them shot through glass. I am more than pleased with it.

I was in Sam's the other day, and they had a big display of the P900. I had forgotten about it.

It is my main camera now. I gave away everything else, cameras, flash units and len$e$. It does everything I want and is a lot of fun. Sneaking up on wildlife is easier now, I do it with a fingertip instead of my knees. ;-)

I have just got mine and it seems pretty good. Not much chance at full zoom without a tripod.I thought I had downloaded some pictures but they haven't appeared.Perhaps they were too big.I'll give it another go when the sun comes out again. It was a little heavier than I expected but with this camera you really don't need anything else. Why carry a load of lenses? The results seem as good as my DSLR which I have now sold.

I have had the camera for about 18 months and so far have let it do most of the work. I think that once I have improved my own skills I may be able get more out it. Most of the time I am satisfied with the results it produces, but not always. Using it handheld I have had the best results using the zoom at the lower to middle end of its reach. I have not used it on a Tri-pod yet so can not comment on results from such. It would be nice to see some bird shots taken by others at the top end of its reach.

I bought when it first came out so I have had it for a while now. It is a fine camera in is own right. Not a perfect camera, but then what camera is?! But for nature shooting it is hard to beat. I keep a monopod attached to the bottom of my camera bag so I have an exterior steading source with me at all times. But, use it very seldom. The P900 Vibration Reduction system seems to work very well in assisting steadiness at the longer zoom ranges. If I were deep into DSLR's, I think I would have the P900 as my backup camera.

I sold mine after less than a month. I found, no surprise but still disappointing, the far reaches of the zoom to be nothing more than an exercise in frustration. Even with a tripod, I needed subjects to be comatose or dead if I hoped to get a shot. For mid to close range, my D800E does it all.

I have had mine for a year, and traveled with it several times. It is so much easier to travel with than my DSLR. And a lot of fun. I hardly use the digital zoom at all, in fact I leave it disabled. The 2k optical zoom is very good on its own. I do use a rubber lens hood and always have an additional battery. I wear trifocals, but have found the EVF to be just fine once adjusted. I love the versatility. Several thousand fotos later, I find the IQ excellent. It does have its limitations, but for my money, it is well worth it.

Wow! Doing that with separate lenses on a DSLR would cost a fortune.

Refurb for $499 -

I have similar problems with extended zoom - it waggles about very much but to be fair it is very efficient on image stabilisation. I used to have the Canon SX50 and found it fiddly to use but P900 is a lot better in that regard.I have had some great images despite it's limitations and it's winning advantage is not having to carry around a bunch of lenses.

How can anyone possibly imagine that they can successfully hand hold the equivalent of a 2000 mm lens? The range of the camera as a handheld device is useless. You would HAVE to use a tripod for three quarters of this camera's range. Anyone who wants a hand held 2000 mm is asking for a miracle, not a camera!

I hand hold it at 2k frequently. Also regularly brace it against something, but rarely use a tripod. Get fine results most of the time.
