Useful post, esp. this, which I did not know: White balance can shift with flash power.
Thanks, jcboy3.

I commented on that in discussing the advantages of a planned upgrade progression with studio strobes. Paul C Buff Einstein E640 monolights have the same color temperature at all power levels. Multiple lights can be used at significantly different power levels without producing color casts.

With speedlights the lower the power the bluer the light. With studio strobes the light gets redder at lower power settings. Hence a very powerful light at full power using a softbound has a very different color than a light at low power used as a fill or side light with a simple reflector. Mixing speedlight with strobes is a problem, and mixing power levels is a problem.

There are at least 3 different strobe models that maintain constant color across power levels. The Paul C. Buff Einstein E640 is the strobe of choice. Broncolor has two models and Photogenic makes one. Note that Profoto models often said to have constant color do not, instead they are resettable to the same color per shot but it varies with the power settings.

SO much information! To strobe or flash are thing I hadn't considered. Thank you all that have taken your time and given thoughtful responses. So much to consider, but this is one of the things I like about the hog, no one makes you feel like your stupid for not knowing something, and all of you willing to share your knowledge. Thanks again!

Yes, need to,think about the current situation, where you want to be in 6, 12 and 48 months and your budget now and going forward. Even then, new products or information can change the plan. But that is not always bad either.

Best,
