You can get the Lighting to SD card adapter from Apple and copy your images to your iPad, but you have to view them in Photos. I believe that the current iOS, 9.3.something will read RAW files.
Apple sells a card-reader-to-iPad cable. Works like a charm and dirt cheap. It auto loads to Photos but you should be able to move them elsewhere after the download.

I use the reader all the time for my iPad. It works great. You can pick and choose which ones you want to down load even. I will then transfer them over to my laptop wirelessly. I've never had a problem with either. Side of it.
I use a thing called "iReader", it reads SD and micro SD cards and has a lightening connector as well as USB 3.0 and a micro USB connector. Cost about $25 bucks on Amazon. Works great!
The D7100 requires a wifi adapter. I Have the adapter and can send photos from the D7100 to my iphone. I don't have an ipad but it would probably work.
