That annoys me, too, but I suspect they think we're too stupid to understand anything else. I hate it when someone says, for example, that the diameter of the earth is 100 times smaller than the diameter of the sun. That's a very bad way to discuss science. Why not just say the diameter of the earth is 1/100th the diameter of the sun?

Exactly! And I guess they were too busy protesting something, probably school, to pay attention in that 5th and later grade math classes.

I suppose this is why the English language is considered the hardest to learn. Too many words sound alike and some even spelled the same. The words I see most mis-used is Their, There and They're. BTW, I made part of my living in the field of technical writing and always had a proof-reader that would correct and OK my work. Still, mistakes were printed. It happens.

How many caught my mistake??

What? No one caught the grammar error in the first paragraph? " If this were the only problem," Uhhh, WERE the ONLY problem? And then in the second paragraph he talks about using a grammar expert. See ironic vs. coincidental.

Sorry, but "If this were the only problem" is in the subjunctive mood (statement contrary to fact). Therefore it is correct. If the sentence said, "If it was," it would be wrong--very wrong.

WERE is correct. The IF makes it so. WAS would be incorrect.

You are sounding like one of the hordes of Composition teachers that would rather flunk a student than help them.

Fifty four years out of college and I still have to read their crap
