What neck strap lengths have users found best. Camera bottom above or below belly button? By how much about? Fatty, lean make a difference. Ideas welcomed.

John, I realize that anatomical variations from person to person will require various lengths. So, rather than a specific length, I'll give a positional reference. I adjust my strap length just long enough to be able to slip my arm through it without having to take the camera off to change from having it hanging directly in front of me to hanging diagonally across my chest and positioned on my hip.

I use a cross-body sling and allow the camera to hang at about my wrist. In this manner, I can cup it with my hand while walking and it is ready to bring to my eye for a photo. The sling also cushions the weight of the camera and lens (usually 300mm).

It depends on camera and lens. If a larger camera with big lens I carry it on my shoulder with lens pointing behind my back. More protected that way. For my Sony RX100 I carry in front of me up high so it is easy to bring to eye level.

I just went through this. I don't have 6 pack abs - I have beer keg abs. I tried a couple of shoulder straps from Amazon and found them too short. Went to my local camera store and got a long shoulder strap for $14- can't remember the brand - some generic Mastersomething brand. I wear it across my body with the camera hanging down near my hip like a sling and I let it sit sort of sit on my rear pants pocket when I am walking. When I have my hand in my side pocket I can keep it from swinging and yet near to hand. Very comfortable. The long strap has quick releases. Sometimes, when I am using a lighter lens I will take off the long strap and clip the two short ends attached to the camera together and use them as a wrist strap.

Those of us capable of thinking for ourselves adjust our straps wherever we want them.

I've had a Tamrac N45 strap for over 25 years and purchased another when I got my Sony bridge camera. It's not fancy but, does have a suede padded section in the middle. Always carry the camera above the belly commonly just about elbow level unless I have the Tamron 150-500 mounted. Then I carry it by the tripod foot as the strap mounts aren't designed to hold that much weight.

Same here, but I mostly use a cross body sling which achieves the same thing. Much more comfortable when carrying FF camera with Large, fast zoom.

I have abandoned neck straps. Too much pressure on neck/back with D7100. Used Black Rapid for a few years and just recently switched to Peak Design using both the sling and wrist clutch. After several months I find my self using the wrist strap significantly more than the sling. That being said the sling is extremely easy to adjust length while in use!

Now, now, bull - you know very well that nothing about photography is more complicated than camera straps!

I use a Optech slider across my body. It rests at my waist where I can hold it still with my left hand. Very comfortable.
