WOW Jerry! That's good to know! Guess I'll never buy a camera unless the grip is included, at least that's what I used to tell my friends when Canon didn't include the grip on their pro models. Thank God the grip for my D810 cost less!

That's correct, but remember we're talking about the purchase of a pro-level aps-c camera for $2,000! I'm not sure if going cheap on a third-party grip is a good economy of scale. While some third-party grips work well, the functionality could be compromised and the build certainly is. If I was buying a pro camera like that, I would save up for the real deal magnesium alloy grip, not an inexpensive plastic wannabe.
That's exactly what I did when I bought the OEM grip for my Canon 7D Mark II, although even the Canon OEM grip is a lot less money, at $210, than the Nikon grip. Since the Nikon grip is so expensive, it does beg the question whether there is a technical reason for it being so expensive, other than just the build.

I don't think nikon makes a battery grip for the 5xxx. As for the 7100 you can select the inner battery to drain after the grip battery is low. My D3s holds one big battery at a time. No accessory grip

I lucked out on the OEM grip for the D500. Long before I had the camera Amazon had the grip for $350, so I grabbed one.

I just do NOT get it on why in the heck would someone spend $2k on a great body and only to buy the cheapest battery grip.
You will get what you pay for.
I know of a few colleagues who did the exact same thing and only to find out something would fail,
like some batteries would not work or certain controls stop working or even shorted out.
People, please buy the orig grip to fully take advantage of the great D500.
Would you buy a new truck and put cheap knockoff tires and expect them to last a while?

Some people like the feel of a gripped camera in their hands and the way it can balance heavier lenses, as well as the ability to shoot portrait and landscape easily with dual controls when rotating the camera 90 degrees. Housing a second battery is nice but for most folks I don't believe it's the primary reason for getting one.

I agree. I use a grip for exactly the same reason you suggest and I only use Nikon grips with my Nikon cameras. I shoot with a D5, grip built in, and a D810 with a grip. I am just so used to the larger size body and having the second set of controls for portrait orientation, that I prefer the grip. The second feature of the grip, for me, is that I can use the exact same battery for both cameras which is something that Nikon has been offering for some time. I do not use both batteries, just the one in the grip. Using two different batteries just doesn't work well for me and my memory!

Why would someone pay Nikon for their overpriced accessories? I gave them enough money purchasing cameras and lenses. I use DSTE brand grips on the D800 & D810, and they work just fine. $90 vs. over $700.
