OK. So I couldn't pass up the sale (ending June 30) on the Pro-100. However, I notice the cartridges are pretty pricey. Anyone have a less expensive alternative? I've always been hesitant to take a chance with non-manufacturer ink. But, if any of you have had good experience with alternatives for the Pro-100, or perhaps better sources than the one I normally use (B&H), I would appreciate hearing about them.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Jeff,

If you have a Fry's Electronics store nearby give them a try. They will refill your Canon cartridges with industry standard inks.
The major problem with third party replacement ink cartridges is not the ink, it is the replacement cartridge. Fry's take your empty cartridge, pretests the cartridge, cleans them if necessary, fills the cartridge with fresh ink, and returns your old cartridge with fresh ink.

If the cartridges you purchased from Canon worked well then the refilled one should as well. As time will pass your original cartridges may become defective from use, Fry's will have Canon cartridges you can us until refill is needed and start the process over again.

I have a Fry's about 10 miles from home and they have refilled my Canon ink cartridges.
You simply drop off your empty cartridges in the morning and later in the afternoon pick up the refills.

I got a Pro-100 a few months ago...

I'll be sticking with the OEM inks.

In my opinion, there is just too much risk of problems with the printer or the print life, with third party inks.

I don't disagree that OEM inks are a rip off... they are! But then again, after discounts and rebates I got the Pro-100 itself for next to nothing.

And the cost to operate the Pro-100 is less than that of the older Epson it's replacing. The ink sets for the Epson were roughly 25% cheaper than the Canon, but they also were about half the size. They also didn't have the life of the Canon inks.

If you are going to have someone refill your cartridges be sure to read about issues with yellow ink cartridge refills.

Precision Colors has a line formulated just for the Pro-100, and with custom ICC profiles for the Pro-100.

I got a set of refillable cartridges, chip resetter, ink for 7 refills (4 oz, they sell bottles up to 16oz at $23 each except light gray which is $26) filler tops with syringe, instructions for moving the chip from a Canon cartridge to the refillable one. The 4 oz bottles are squezy bottles which with the filler cap and syringe make filling easy. You refill the 4 oz bottles from the larger ones.

That was $172 including tax and shipping. So about $24.57 per set compared to $124 for Canon ink.

The colors are great and so far no signs of fast fading like with some third party ink.

Yep!!!!

"Precision Colors" --- I as well have went this route ...

Recently I have a major call for my work at a few local galleries - and a few one person consumers who wanted prints up to 13X19. I already had the Pro 100 and a Canon 9000 - (I think I like the Pro 100 prints better = Especially the Shades of Gray (B&W prints).... The cost of the ink tanks were a concern to me as well.

It was very timely that another member of the "Saint Louis Camera Club" (100+ year club) had a member give a lecture on how to refill your ink cartridges .... This fellow is not only one of the best photographers in STL, he is a very demanding and "picky" sort of guy... And I Trust Him on just about everything concerning photography. He gave the lecture and showed the procedure that is outlined in the information from "Precision Colors" for the Pro 100. I took his advice and went with THAT company...

I can vouch for the quality of what Robert here is saying about this company.... Good Stuff it is.

After making a print - letting it "rest" and "gas-off" for two days - I took it into the bright sun in my back yard... I left it there for three days. This print was subjected to temperatures from highs of 90f to lows of 65f -- Not only that but the humidity here is very well known all over. The result was a very little fading - however Not Much. Not as much as anyone could tell the difference at "First Glance" ..

So I am now printing exclusively with ink from "Precision Colors".... Good company - Good product - Good price.

Once again, the potential problem issue with 3rd party inks isn't longevity or color, it's clogging. Caveat emptor.

I couldn't pass it up either. A lot of people are buying them with the rebate and find that they don't need them so they sell them for around $100. I found one brand new except they guy took the ink out and used it in the other Pro-100 (he bought 2 of them). So he sold it without ink to me for $80. I found ink here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/182134369964?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT for $29 and bought two sets. I initialized the printer with this ink, and then performed the head alignment as suggested, then printed an 8x10 photo of one I had already printed with my Pixma Pro-9000 Mark II. It came out perfect using the paper that came with the printer. As you know, it came with 5 sheets of Luster Photo Paper. Then I used my Xrite Colormunki Photo to create 4 or 5 profiles for some paper I have that isn't Canon paper and didn't come with icc profiles. Works perfect. I like the fact that it's wireless and that I don't need to have it sitting next to my computer like the Pro-9000 does. Now I need to find someone that wants an older 9000.

I have the cannon pro100 and have been getting my ink from LDProducts.com. Good prices and the ink works great. I have had no problems, so check them out.

I have owned the Canon Pro 100 for nearly a year and have used LD replacement cartridges for over 6 months with no problems. http://www.4inkjets.com/Canon-PIXMA-PRO-100-printer-ink-cartridges-toner.
I do try to print something at least every 48 hours and leave the printer on. I can't tell which of my photos have been printed with Canon ink and which with LD ink. Caveat.. I do not know what the results would be a few years after printing.

to complete by earlier reply. When the yellow warning light comes on I just push the resent button and continue to use until the cartridge is completely out. Works like a charm.

Precision Colors does not sell new third party cartridges.
They either give you the gear and tell how to modify your Canon cartridges or you can buy refurbished modified (a hole and rubber plug to refill) Canon cartridges w/o chips, you transfer the chips from your Canon cartridges.
So, no clogging problems at all and my printer sat for almost a month when I was sick, in a family room on the south side of the house that gets HOT and dry.
When not in use I cover the printer with a thick cotton towel and plastic cover on top of that. (my area is very dusty as well as hot and dry)
I have been using the Pro-100 for 1 1/2 years that way and never a sign of clogging with Canon or Precision Colors inks.

That would work, if I had a Fry's, but not much luck with that in the Pocono Mountains. Thanks anyway.

I have used my pro 100 for two years. Over a year ago I started using YoYo ink from Amazon. Lower price and great results.

It is not the price of the cartridge, but the price of the print. I've done all the math I can. Considering quality, the print price of the Pro-100 is competitive.

To keep the total investment down, I keep one set of spares. As I use one, I will order from B&H or Amazon. B&H does not charge sales tax and Amazon has faster shipping. I'm not a high volume printer, so I could probably not keep spares. The low ink warning comes on well before the out of ink warning stops the printing. The low ink warning comes on soon enough that Amazon two day shipping gets to me before I actually run out.

If quality is not the most important and low print price is, there are some new Epsons out that use only 4 colors and the ink comes in large bottles. Photo prints are reviewed as pretty good.

I agree.. I don't do a huge amount of printing, but the quality of this printer is outstanding, and I have no faith in 3rd party ink. I also order a set from Amazon to keep on hand, & when it's gone I order another. Works for me.
