Nikon Coolpix P900 image size, or lack there of

I have a P900, and it only takes jpeg(s). It has a 16M sensor, and with the image size set to the largest, 4608 x 3456 for (16M), and image quality to FINE, the largest file I can get is 7.1M. Can any of you holders of great technical wisdom and knowledge (that I don't have), enlighten me as to why I don't get larger files? Possibly, I don't really understand how compression works?? Appreciate it.
Nikon Tech support wasn't much help.

You're confusing megapixels with megabytes. A jpg of 7 megabytes (or smaller) is normal for a 16-megapixel camera.

The file size (megabytes, abbreviated as mb) of your jpg's will vary, depending on how much "stuff" (and colors) are in them. For example, a photo with mostly blue sky will be a smaller file size than one that is full of details. So don't be surprised to find sizes between 4 and 7 mb.

Jaybyrd, How do you like your P900. My present camera is a Fuji HS 50 and I have been thinking about the P900. I have never regretted selling my digital slr with it's 100-400 is lens. Lynn Sumerson

I love it. I bought it for a trip to the Galapagos islands and Machu Picchu because of several things : luggage size and weight restrictions; didn't want to be changing lenses in windy and sand conditions, wet landings on the islands, and i liked the reviews. I carried out all day, every day for two weeks, took over 1400 fotos, and am VERY pleased with the results. It is responsive, very good AF, and versatile. Took many bird and wildlife shots, through out the zoom range, getting shots no one else could. The clarity is impressive. The shots of people, landscapes, cityscapes and videos are excellent. I have had it almost a year, and wanted to be familiar with it before the trip we just returned from.
I find i gravitate to it, rather than my dslr, more and more frequently. However, it does have limitations. Primarily on the creative side. And you do need to have at least one spare battery. Everything in the camera is electronic, i was changing the battery about once a day but the camera was ON for hours at a time. I tend to use the eye piece viewer rather than the screen, but both are clear and easy to use, and I wear trifocals.
Hope this is helpful. If you have any other questions, will be happy to try to answer them for you.

Nikon Japan filed a patent for a 100X lens to replace the P900, 83X.

I bought the P900 because I thought I had to have it....need vs greed.....It sits in a box because it is too complicated for me to use. I use my D810 and D800.....

I downloaded the p900 manual from the Nikonusa site to my cell and a third party book Photography with the Nikon Coolpix P900 by Alexander White also to my cell. White 's book does a good job of simplifying and expanding on the manual. And i always have my cell with me.
