There is a learning curve, but there is a lot of information on sites like mandolincafe. A very popular finish for musical instruments which is far easier is Tru-oil, which was originally created for gunstocks. Lots of information about using it on mandolincafe as well.

Yes, I saw someone finishing an instrument with Tru-Oil. Although I'd like to achieve perfection, it may be difficult to achieve on my first attempt, and I'd rather not mess it up.

Thanks.

I am confused. ( I am constantly confused, the world is a confusing place. Anyone who thinks he knows everything, and therefore not confused- is in reality even more confused than Me ) I thought one could be either French or Polish. Then again maybe there is such a thing as Frolish. or maybe even Polench. Told you I am confused.

Check with Sarge69 (above) about that.

Thanks for the links.

If you are planning to go with French Polish, it is highly recommended that you put in some time practicing on something other than the uke.

The top pic shows clear polish, dirty shellac and other supplies. You can see the color build up on the masking tape covering the neck / fingerboard extension. The areas I want to highlight are just cut back and repolished. When I'm happy with the job it gets a couple of coats of clear. If I get tired of this look later on, it's easily stripped with metho, no sandpaper need ever touch the soundboard again.

Have never done it, but I have used whitening tooth paste to slowly work haze off old uncoated lenses. That's a lot of work, but rewarding when you see how much contrast returns to the image drawn by the lens.

After looking at French polishing and Tru-Oil online, I'm going to use Tru-Oil. Maybe I'll get the materials and practice FP on something for future reference.

Thanks for the advice.
