Hmmmm.. I've seen them with a long stem, but not 2 feet! Maybe I'm wrong.... I'm curious to find out so I'll be watching!!
Still a great shot!
I think it is goat's beard. The flower is daisy like and yellow although i have seen some purple ones.
I think Brian is right, around here the yellow ones are called Yellow Salsify.
I'm certain Brian is right. When I was a kid (way back in the 40's) they moved into northern Illinois. I spent a lot of time exploring wild flowers, birds and nests, mushrooms, etc along the railroad that ran through our property. One spring they showed up and each year after that I could see that they expanded a few more miles East. It wasn't until many years later that I recognized their similarity to the salsify (vegetable oyster) that I grew in my garden and figured out what they were. The salsify flowers are purple.
I agree with Brian, bushpilot, and Donin that it is goat's beard. The seedhead is larger than a dandelion's and it is taller than a dandelion. I have found them in poor soil beside roads and railroad tracks.
Well, it certainly looks like a dandelion, Dale, but I've never heard of or seen them getting 2 feet tall! Wow!
