Just wondering if anyone has had experience with Lume Cumes for outdoor or indoor lighting...1500 lumens at 6000k.

I had to Google it to find out what it is. According to B&H there is no way to use them with any kind of soft box, so I wouldn't be interested.

I dont know why I do this, but I bought one for my wife....who likes to use some artificial light for shooting hummingbirds in the back yard....

And then I ask for opinions...its a strange kind of dementia...

Its a pretty powerful little bugger...

It is clever, has some really well thought-out feature like a suction cup mount AND magnet. It is pretty bright.
BUT it is SMALL. So unmodified it will be a hard and harsh source.

Hey guys! Just wanted to chime in here as the cube has a built in fresnel lens which diffuses the light and gives you a nice 60 degree beam with no hotspots or harsh falloff. Right now you can easily add any diffusion with some gaffers tape and a small diffusion gel, or you can try bouncing the light which works great! Lume Cube will be shortly releasing a full diffusion and modifier kit where you'll be able to add custom color gels, soft boxes, snoots, barn doors, etc. it's going to be quite cool! Thanks for your support.

Yep, it does put out a LOT of light with several intensity settings. Now how to use it? Hand held or just lay it on the table for a background light.

Why wouldn't it work there? According to the video ad, it "sticks" to just about everything and light is light!

Being a part time "do it your self" person, I do question the $80 price tag though.

You are right. Light is light. And a small light source is a small hard light source - you cannot cheat the physics. To make this a soft light, one need to make it bigger and the Fresnel lens does not make the source bigger, if just take the source and DISPERSES it over a wider angle. It does not diffuse it.
