I am looking for suggestions on the best place (and cheapest) to post photos for family and friends with some level of privacy. Email is pretty clunky for sharing. I am strictly an amateur but on occasion shoot school pictures for grand kids and family portraits. I'd like to be able to post all of the "proofs" somewhere so they could choose the prints they want.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Why not a private Facebook page? It's free.

Dropbox, cost zero. You can have one big directory or many smaller ones and only allow specific people access to each.

jwestman,

E-Mail is only clunky when the image file-size is big. Reduce the physical printing size of all images, and set the resolution down to 72 PPI. This will reduce the overall attachment size of the message and keep the top attachment limit below 20Mb.

Another thing you can do with E-Mail is to select all the images you want to include with your image editor and print the batch to a PDF file, attach the PDF and it should keep the attached PDF below 1Mb.

PS in the above task if you set the printing method to include image file names it should print each image file name below the respective image. It make it a lot easier for the receivers to select the image they want you to print on paper.

This has got to be one of the best answers I've read in a long time.

I only agree if one does not care about the quality of the picture and merely looking to get it through via mail. PDF does compression and the quality will be compromised. A jpg stuffed into PDF.....

I do understand that but if you only want the family to be able to see a selection to pick from it works very well. Maybe I forgot something, most people today only look at pic's on their screen of some kind and very few actually do get prints made.

Thanks gang for the suggestions. Printing to a pdf never even occurred to me and a flickr account is a great idea. I will try both going forward to see what works with the kids.

I like Google Photos. I can make albums and send the link to one or more people.

I use Facebook for that you can create an album and restrict access to whomever you want if someone wants a printed copy they just let me know, I can email them the full size file or have it printed at their local Walgreens, Walmart or where ever they have their own photos printed.

I have used WeTransfer.com (the free version))... and can can upload many, many, many pics to whoever I want (email address). They then download them. Works great.

I used to use Dropbox... which works well also. But I lost a bunch of pics. It seems that when I deleted them from Dropbox they were gone. I didn't transfer them back out of Dropbox to the computer. After that, I never tried it again, to verify what went wrong.

Your own web server. I simply password protect certain folders in one that I use for just that purpose.

Secondly, Dropbox. Simply send an email with a link and they can access and download the photos you wish to share.

I second the Dropbox suggestion, esp. for casual use. Easy and free.

I have used Shutterfly for years. Sharing, albums, storage.
