This is the best tutorial I think. Short segments clearly explained from beginning to end. It is for LR 4 but is virtually perfectly applicable to any LR version.

I agree with DavidM, the Tony Northrup books are the best and they're interactive if you want to do hands on instead of just reading. Our community college now uses two of his books and the student love them. They're very complete and easy to understand, plus you get direct access to Tony as well.

I have the Scott Kelby Lightroom manual and don't like it. He emphasizes the use of keyboard shortcuts for almost everything. Shortcuts may be useful for the person who uses Lightroom for several hours a day, but are almost useless for an old guy like me who can't remember them from one week to the next. I want a manual that completely explains the use of all of the menus and drop down menus and completely defines all of the terminology used in the menus and on the various screens. Any recommendations?

I agree and I feel the way to go is by video instructions. This link is excellent even if it is for LR 4. Most still applies to newer versions of LR.

I have to agree. I do not like Kelby's book on LR either, it's printed on such a small scale that it's hard to see. The pictures of the computer screen are useless. I did buy Laura Shoe's CD and it really turned on the lights for me. I turn on LR and the CD and just switch screens while following her teachings. It's not going to cover every nuance of LR but it will get you to the point that you should be able to make LR work for you. LR is like PS, use what you need, I still refer to Kelby's book for short cuts now that I have a good working knowledge of LR.

If you would consider a set of DVDs instead, I recommend Laura Shoe's set at http://laurashoe.com. She has a few lessons that are free and should allow you to assess her teaching style.

I found it helpful to have LR open, and to play the DVD in another window so that I could try what she just taught for myself.

I too have Laura Shoe's DVD, both the first and second for the output side of Lr and I can't say more about them. These DVD have significantly increased my knowledge of Lr and I use them as stated above. I also have Kelby's book as a backup. One thing to remember - you will not become an expert overnight, and using it improves your understanding. I am a very happy camper at this point.

I started years ago Lr3 and the first is to learn how to setup your catalogue proply....very important! How to import, set up keywords, dates, places and backup. I found a site that helped me a lot photographylife.com. The rest is to watch YouTube videos on LR quick tips. There is lot, laurashoe excellent, Anthony Morganty, Adobe. It's a great program once you get the hang of it.
Enjoy

Hello! I have never replied to any topics here but felt compelled to write as I have several suggestions for you that have helped me so much with LR. (And Photoshop) I messed up when I got LR because I started using it before I understood it. THESE people helped me get back on track and I feel I could now teach it myself. (And have on a small scale). if you are like me, I do not learn well from manuals. BUT I love tutorials. I usually put the tutorial on on my iPad and follow along on my computer actually doing what they say...and repeat it several times until I get it. So, here are my suggestions: As Lloyd said above CreativeLIVE.com is my all time favorite place to learn. The classes are totally free and then if you LOVE THEM you can purchase them for your own personal library. (They have photshop week one week a year and it covers lightroom there also.) I love Ben Whilmore! I also like Russell Brown, Kevin Kubota, Matt Kloskowski, Khara Plicanic and David Cross, all of whom have taught on CreativeLIVE.com. (CreativeLIVE has classes on all kinds of things including photoshop, photography, business, web design, crafts....you know, creative stuff!) check it out!

Another suggestion is Going to Adobe.com. They have several teachers there and they break the learning down into specific subjects within their products. Julieanne Kost is wonderful! She also teaches on CreativeLIVE.

Next, Tim Grey! I bough a video tutorial on fixing problems and starting out on the right foot in Lr. it's called "cleaning up your mess in LIGHTROOM". I am only part way through the whole thing but already he fixed most my sel made problems. You can sign up for his blog which is great. Greylearning.com. And I get his emails which cover topics in LR AND PHOTOSHOP. AskTimgrey.com, I read the ones that interest me...and there are a lot.

That said, I do love Scott Kelby books but again his tutorials are better for me personally: kelbyone.com

lastly, I get books in my local library, as well as ibooks (mastering lightroom by Andrew Gibson)
HOPE THIS HELPS! for sure I hope you check out CREATIVELIVE!

Have a great day! Klm414

The title of her book is "Adobe Photoshop LIGHTROOM CC/6 The Missing FAQ. This book provides a written tutorial and also serves me as a ready reference when I get into LR problems (after all the software is sophisticated and extremely capable.) On Amazon the paper version is priced at $46.95 today, June 7, 2016. I highly recommend the paper version as Victoria Bampton, the author, provides a number of additional benefits when you register your paper purchase, including access to eBook downloads (PDF, ePub and Mobi/Kindle formats). Good luck in your learning and processing! Chief Rob
