It's sad to see GoPro in such a fast decline. I wonder if they will even be in business a year from now. A surfer came up with a great idea for getting video of himself while surfing, and he made millions. Maybe charging $300 - $400 for a camera that others have copied and sold for $50 is what is leading to his demise.

They are only eliminating the low end models.

I have a Hero 4 that my wife gave me for my BD. Its got some very nice features including a super wide lens and the images are pretty good. I've posted some recently.

It can do things that very few cameras can do and costs thousands less. It comes with a protective case and can be used in any weather and conditions, and is half the size of a pack of cigarettes. It does video, time lapse and stills and is surprisingly good in low light. Talented people have done some very creative things with it. I doubt $50 clones are as good.

Perhaps its not for everyone but don't knock it until you tried it.

That's the world of competition, the little guys trying to eat the big guys lunching, eventually it happens and then they're the big guy being eatin. It all works out for the consumer who benefits from it.

Just for the record, Umatic used 3/4" tape. In between Ampex's 2" reels were Sony's 1" reels, a pro format that lasted through the Umatic years, which was a portable (lol) format.

Beta cassettes were the undisputed broadcast standard of the ENG industry after Umatic, for a good decade, and an improved version called Beta SP uped the ante and pretty much killed one inch. In that mirror world Panasonic never stood a chance with VHS. Only last year did Sony finally put Beta SP in the grave.

Not to digress, but Beta was also used with Sony's PCM digitizer (which had selectable 14/16 bit resolution) in the audio recording industry. I still have a working Superbeta machine and their PCM digitizer which delivered professional-quality audio recording at a fraction of the cost and size of an Ampex 1" reel-to-reel. I don't do that anymore, but I did lay in a stock of beta cassettes just in case before they ceased production last year.

I used a PCM digitizer in the 80s with VHS tapes--you don't need super quality for a bitstream. We had a pretty good run here in Japan with DAT machines after that.

What I would like to see is a list of all the GoPro competitors, so I go look and compare features. There are lots of things besides optical quality that go into decision-making.

Reminds me of Carry Mullis and the PCR technique he invented for DNA / Genetic engineering that he thought up while surfing and driving around and trying to impress his girlfriend. It seemed molecular biology was more a back-seat hobby to him with surfing being his real passion. Someone got rich, but it was more likely UC San Diego than Dr. Mullis. He made the mistake of doing the research on the clock and with UC materials.

Well, Kary Mullis did win a Nobel prize for his work, and his consulting and lecturing fees were/are probably quite handsome. His original technique was rather cumbersome (though brilliant), and I think it was after Mullis left Cetus, that Cetus scientists developed a machine that streamlined the process, making it much more efficient, useful, and doable for the general scientific community. At that point, Cetus got rich from licensing the process :) I always had the impression that Mullis had the idea, but others did the heavy lifting to prove it and make it available. Having an idea is one thing, but having the talent and resources to develop it is a different level. This is getting a little tangential, but had he been at a university, rather than a pharmaceutical company, he probably would have profited more as most universities split licensing profits with the inventor.

Key words: "He made millions". Good for him.
Gravy train run onto competition? Sorry, nature of the beast.

Now he can go back to surfing and enjoy life.

I recall him on an episode of Shark Tank, and when introduced as "Who Are These Sharks" the announcer said he was worth seven or eight Billion.

Yes I have a Flylinktect HD 1080 Wifi and the video and pictures are just as good as my GoPro 4. This is for the person asking about the clones. I love my Flylinktech and only paid $56.00 on wish.com and came with a bunch of adapters.

You could check out the Flylink Tech SJ4000 it has wide angle zooming and many attachments paid $56.oo on wish.com, I also own a gopro 4 and the image and video quality on both are pretty much the same. You could try and there is not much to loose after all, that is how I felt and ended up on the winning side anyway.

fstop12, I've found Peyou to make very good clones. I have two; their 4K model that sells for about $130 and their standard 1080P that sells for $54. Both are excellent cameras, but their best feature is Penny in customer relations. If you have a problem with one of their cameras she WILL get you the answers you need, even if it's, sorry the camera isn't capable of what you want to do, please return it. I'm obviously very, very impressed with their customer service.

So Jerry, what are the names of these clones? I'd like to look at one if I can find it.

What peyou sells is the Flylink Tech they just sell and older model more expensive than getting it from wish.com but you could also get them at amazon or ebay, whatever you chose it is all the same just different prices. I even take mines diving.
