I still use Picasa. When I upload to the cloud they show up in Google Photos

Correct.
I also stored a download copy on my hardrive for future computers.

Everything went well in Picasa until I uploaded my pictures and then they were all forwarded to Google pictures. If anyone can tell me how to prevent that, I would be so very happy!! I love working in Picasa.
Don't upload the pictures from Pixasa if they are going where you don't want them. Use whatever up-loader is available for whichever site or online albums you choose to use instead.

I have been experimenting with Windows 10 photo editor and Canon photo program(s). I couldn't find a satisfying substitute for Picasa, especially re organization and storage. I assumed the problem was me, and am happy to see others experienced the same. Question: can photos still be selected and emailed directly from Picasa (I think not)? BTW: Google, in its calm-down-don't-worry notice/announcement seemed to suggest that it plans to provide an acceptable replacement for Picasa.
If you're interested in using another editor, check out
http://lightzoneproject.orgYeah, you have to register with an email address. Truth is, I've never received an email from them.

I have been using Picasa from day 1 and really liked it to work on my travel (documenting) pictures. Now that Picasa was bought and dropped by Google, I am lost. I can't seem to find out how/where to download the pictures from my Lumix camera to Google. *I am not thrilled with this change -however I am not able to find a program, free or not, that is like Picasa. Aside from the basics, I like to add text to my pictures. I would appreciate your knowledge on downloading to Google and what other programs are simple like Picasa was. Thank you.

As others have said, you can still use Picasa, if you keep everything on your computer. I think you may be storing files online. In that, I think Picasa is gone. If you store the files on your computer, I think you will be all right.

You can add text in Photoshop using layers.

I was working in Picasa recently. I came out of it for a moment. When I went back, all my photos had disappeared. It took a couple of days to find them in Google Photos. I had hundreds of photos in Picasa, but only a few, 75, came back.
Now I keep getting a message that Picasa is compacting its data base. So far there isn't much I like about the editing process in Google Photos. When I download photos, they do not go into Picasa at all. They go into my picture file and stay there. I am using a Canon software for editing that came with my Canon printer, Selphy 910, but I still miss Picasa. I'll try some of the suggestions I've seen here. Maybe something will work.
I can't understand why folks have so much trauma with photos in Picasa.
To begin with, you don't store pics in Picasa, you only edit them with Picasa.
You store your pics in your "My Pictures" folder.
If your picture viewing programme is Picasa, if not ,make it your default viewing programme, all you do is double click on the pic you want to view or edit, or rt click & choose Picasa, then work your magic.
That done, you save it or save as, & it goes back to where you had it or want to put it. But it ain't stored in Picasa, that is only the programme you open it with. It keeps thumbnails in it, but it's not where you store your pics.
If you want a different programme to be your default pic viewing one, you then have to rt click on your pic & choose Picasa.
I've used it for years & I agree it's simple to use.
I also think it was Google from whom I downloaded it as a freebie, originally, so Google taking it over don't sound right. It's always been.
Whether or not they are ditching it, I've yet to discover that.
What is the world coming to. No Picasa!! Wrist slashing time.

I, like many other Picasa users, miss the ease with which you can write text on the photos. Is there another easy editor that allow you to write text directly on the photos ?

Not that I'm aware of but I'm no geek.
If you had Picasa in your computer, & still have, you can still use it the same.
I don't think they can take it away from you.
What worries me is that all these companies, Google, Microsoft etc, seem to be pushing us all to a Cloud style of operation, where they have access to your data. They want to control what you do with your stuff. Others can see inside your private data, sometimes with your permission, to solve problems, but, there are the dishonest element out there who are smart enough to hack in & invade your privacy.
I don't like this trend towards more control by outsiders, into my doings.
Photos are becoming a source of value to be hijacked or manipulated, for illegal gain.

I must concede that after my comment about Google owning
Picasa from the start, I read it up & found that to be not the case.
Google did buy it from its originators. Shot my trap off half cocked, sorry.
I found "Photoscape",simpler and very easy to use.Once you have spent time what there various things do.Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic and thank you so much, I just downloaded PhotoScape and tried out the Insert Text and it works like a charm. An excellent free alternative to Picasa.

I found that photos can be emailed out of Picasa (using gmail.com) same as before, no change. LawHoc.
