But too many parents expect the schools to teach all that stuff, in addition to the three R's. Not right. Mom and dad should teach manners and respect. Not schools.

This is all on the parents. Lack of respect for nature usually starts in a home that has lack of respect for most anything.

They should lock up all the kids and their parents for 5 years! That would be a fair judgement and set a precedent that will get the next idiots to think twice!
I also agree the teachers aren't teaching as it is, let alone have the time to teach dead beat kids skills in responsibility or morality!

Aside from the birds (terrible) there may be a bigger story here. Children who kill animals for sport often grow up to be serious criminals. These kids just may have very serious problems.

I spent 30+ years in law enforcement on L.I. and can attest that what you just said is absolutely true! I wish someone had photographed these miscreants doing this!

Respect and love of everything great and small should come from the parents and family, but since both parents have to work, they have no time for their children and they run wild!!! Very sad situation and I feel sorry for those teaches and law enforcement because their hands are now tied!!

When they catch these miscreants they should post their pictures and a description of their deeds on Facebook, Ugly Hedgehog, and National Geographic Magazine; then sentence them to two years of "mucking" out the stable of the local Zoo.

This horrible story reminds me of something that happened here last week. Apparently 2 'teens' set a dog on fire, but the dog survived after being rescued and treated by a local vet. I'll never understand cruelty.

I don't know what goes on in their heads to do something so cruel...
we hear many cases of animal abuse here and most of the time they are adults!!! These teens will grow up to be monsters with no regard for anything or anyone... very, very sad :(
