I need to process it but as soon as I took the pic the clouds noticed my new scope.
So, here is the setup and the view I had as soon as I shot.
I'll add the flare later on.
If I can salvage. It's way over exposed.
I was trying to isolate on just the flare and where it came up.
Not great but its a learning curve thing still.

Cool Jim!
How long do those flare last? Seconds, or longer?
Was this a single exposure? Or a video?
Nice to see your set-up ready for action.
Scope, diagonal, 24-8 mm zoom lens, Camera. Perched on your AVX.
Bummer those AlbaTurkey clouds. Do you get a clear sky period? Or is it hit and miss due to your altitude?
I'm almost to our typically clear time of the year. But we are getting some thunderstorms lately. Slam, Bam, Afternoons, and clearer evenings/nights.
And Tuesday night a bunch of very high altitude wispy clouds that more resembled fog.
Shoot when you can, Man.

Thanks Sonny.
This was a single shot in between clouds and before it completely closed up.
I was able to view and tweak before it all went to poo but I only had time for one shot and I had the exposure time set too high.
This is usually our clear time but we are not going to complain about getting potential moisture. I just grab when I can and some days, just view and play with the pressure tuner. It lets me move the focus plane up and down in the atmosphere and see the surface or tops of the flares as in this case. I think if my exposure had been better, I could have had some surface detail as well.
I just didn't have time to muck about. We are supposed to have 3 more storms lined up with us in their sites. Saturday might be clear but then its supposed to roll the next storm in for Sunday and Monday.
Funny how this happens when I really want to just play.
Keep dry and shoot when you can as well.
;)

I know what a pressure cooker does, but not a pressure tuner.
Sounds cool that you can adjust through the atmospheres irregularities.
I think my DSLR is just too lowly to work with the new diagonal. I need to play more.
I am entertaining Bruce's idea of a cell phone on an eyepiece. Might be a way to play. Or something to try anyway.
I doubt I could do much worse... :-P
Cross Hairs.

Nice shot! I have an 80mm Lunt Pressure Tune Double Stack and enjoy the views immensely! Technically speaking what you have imaged is a solar prominence. Flares are very short-lived violent eruptions. I have been solar observing for a very long time and only had the luck to see just one.

Thank you for the clarification.
I just started this adventure not quite a month ago and I know I have a lot to learn.
I wanted to double stack but funds said no.
I assume you image as well as observe? Please post some of your images here.
I am thinking that I am not going to get what we see in the scope without stacking. Plus I am shooting with color not monochrome. That's next on the list. Probably the ZWO mono camera.

Look at that setup Jim, very impressive.
Now I know why you get the shots you do.

And further tweaking has revealed a smaller but clear prominence near the middle from a nice pocket in the surface.
Hey Diddle Diddle, I guess I need to fiddle more.

Hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle.
Nice job Jim, so the white spots are the large flares???

In the center of the cluster of spots is what looks like a wisp of smoke. That is material coming up that I thought were flares are really prominences.
I'm learning as I go here. I've been cruising a few other forums getting a better idea of what I'm seeing.
Thank you for the compliment.

Quite amazing what you are getting from our closest star.

It is soooooo frustrating getting good visual and seeing all of the threads on the sun and not being able to catch in the photos. I am having issues getting sharp focus in the camera arena but the zoom eyepieces are outstanding.
Aurgh..

You will get it. I know you will, you are a good Photographer!
Rome wasn't built in a day.
Look how long it to me to finally get my picturds I post.
If you think you may continue to pursue Sun shots, you may need to consider a camera that works particularly well for solar.
You have the scope, and you got the diagonal. Maybe a camera as specialized is a good idea?
No pressure, but this does happen to be the last day of April...
10 days....
I see
where one guy is using the Orion Star Shoot II, and the Lunt site comes up with no camera listed for the pictures I looked at. (WTF?)
I find the SS II is my lowly Eyepiece camera.
I think I need to go set up and screw around.
Get busy, Jim.

What Camera is everyone else going to use May 9th.
I have an expensive camera, Celestron 8300, but it's forte is DSO's so I'll be using my D800E DSLR.
Maybe I should give it a try on the Sun this afternoon.
Maybe someday I too will be able to get some good pics.

Practice now so you have a starting point.
I plan on using Tammy and Solar both. I can use a standard pod for Tammy and the AVX for the solar I might have to go to the other side of this mound of dirt. I don't see the sun until 7 and its in trees until 8 or 8:30 ish.
Gonna have to start looking hard soon.
