I am looking at buying this lens and was wondering if anyone has one and how they like or dislike it.
If the one you get is anything like mine it will become your favorite. Very sharp and very quick focus. Quiet IS. If I lost it I would replace it immediately without any hesitation. Hard to find a used one because they are keepers. Doesn't accept the Canon extenders. It does work well with the Kenko PRO 300 1.4 and still retains auto focus.
i had one was ok found it slow to focus and frustrating sold it to up grade to a sigma 150 500 I am much happier now.

Which did you find sharper, the Canon or Sigma?
I bought this lens after a great deal of debate between this lens, the 300 F4 L prime, and the 70-200 F4 L. I chose this since I couldn't justify a prime lens and wanted more zoom power. Most of my use is at 300mm and wide open. More power (i.e., 400mm) and faster (i.e., F2.8 or F4) would be appreciated, but we all have our budgets.
Otherwise, the 70-300 F4/5.6 L IS USM works well for me. I've used in light rain with confidence of not destroying the lens. The hood helps cut glare. A tripod collar would be a nice inclusion as this lens is heavy teamed with a 7D.
You might want to also look at the 100-400L zoom. That extra 100 mm makes a world of difference.
It was my second lens. Originally I thought it was ok. At a point, Canon wanted me to send one of me lenses back my camera to check my camera's focusing. They did an adjustment to the lens as well as the camera, and when it came back, it was stellar! But I don't use it as much now as I used to, because of other newer lens purchases. 70-200/F4, 400mm/5.6 (LOVE this lens), and a 100-400 e.5-5.6.
i have one its nice .but dosent get close enuf so i went out and got a 100-400 l its the sh-- but it is 3 pounds so if i d ont feel like packing it i take the 300. if you go with the100-400 use a monopod
These were images I took after receiving my lens back from Canon after they adjusted focus. Should have included them before.

Any reason why you didn't use the cheaper
