To all those who have suggested answers to this phenomenon, I have contacted Canon Customer Support and they walked me through an analysis. Joe, the rep, told me to move the image to my Desktop. After there, he told me to run Digital Photo Professional software. He told me call up the image from my desktop. Once there he asked me to right click on the image. He then told me to right click on Properties and asked me what the mode was. NOW I HAVE EGG THE SIZE OF AN OSTRICH ON MY FACE. Sorry guys, but the camera was set in HDR mode. It was the only image set to the type of exposure. When you get old, some things just don't work as well. The image is an artifact of the HDR option: shooting three images and combining them onto one file. The stationary objects came out fine, but the moving object -- the airplane-- was moving, thus creating a ghosting effect. Now we all know and I do apologize for any comments I may have made. Sometimes the frustration gets to be too much especially when no logical answers appear. ...UFO's? now, really? Thanks for all the answers and it was not to find put how far this could go.

After carefully reading through 5 pages of comments, I was trying to think how this could be anything other than HDR (three photos, slightly different times, different exposures). My only gradification is that I was right.

Thank you for posting this and asking the question. It well illustrates potential issues with HDR.

I'm glad you posted this and found the answer. Some of the comments were certainly going off into Never-Never Land.

I suspected in-camera HDR at the outset, and that has finally been resolved. What I find most useful from this post is the clear demonstration of what size of area the camera manipulates around the airplane and the effect it has on the "noise" in the sky.
