I retired due to a disability. I was one of those lucky people who loved what he did for a living. Truth is I wish I was still working. Every day was different from the previous day, I traveled to every Hospital in the NY City area. From Northern Westchester to South Hampton. I was a respected expert in my field- I miss it every day.

I loved what I was doing too. But I had several things in the queue for when I retired, that is CRITICAL!!!

Currently my wife is putting together an outdoor sculpture show for over 60 artists, she needs lots of assistance (computer, woodworking, putting together bases out of pipe, ...). I was given the opportunity to photograph the interior of a historic home (after many years of photographing around there) and the pictures were picked up for a book they published, I'm trying to become a woodworker (the other stuff keeps getting in the way) ... You have to have things to do that you love. I thought I would die from boredom if I couldn't be designing data warehouses for large corporations and institutions (best were NYPD and FDNY!) but turns out the other stuff is just as compelling.

For a week or two, I'm employed again. I got a temporary job working on test papers for the NY State Common Core tests. The days run for nine or ten hours, so I wake up, take a quick look at the computer, and leave. When I get home after 6:00, I do the best I can for dinner, and plop myself into a chair in front of the TV. It's like I don't have a life!

My heart goes out to all of you people who are still working full time.

Here, here Jerry... here, here!

Jerry,
Read some bad things about common core math. I've read parents have to take night courses, so they can help their kids with their math homework? Haven't looked into it yet, but I probably should. My daughter will start real school in a 2 years. Any tips?
Thanks!
Andy

Retiring ahead of retiring age at 62, hat was one of my happiest day in my life, because I was retiring after 14 years working for Japanese owned company. It was most backward, de-motivating company I have ever encountered. I have working experience from the Middle East, from Europe, but I have never experienced such a friction between Japanese management and employees. Even Japanese employees who were not originated from the Japanese mother company were treated like a dirt.

I retired 22 years ago. Two weeks after I retired they called me back. I was quality control manager for the tool and die div. in the aerospace industry. I did go back but with my own hours. I could come and go at my own time. I went in at 6 o'clock in the morning and left before noon. Their problems where all solved with common sense. It seemed they all were blaming each other the screw ups. Sounds like our government. I only did that for about a month.

Work is a four letter word! I started my own business and loved it until I discovered photography and realized what a prick my boss was (in the mirror). Turned the business over to my son and I can't wait each morning to go out and shoot something new.

Where are you from originally, and why did you pick Rome to retire in?

Rich

Originally from Poughkeepise NY, lived in MI, OH, NC, MD and PA. Last place prior to moving was Newburgh NY.

Picking Rome was simple - slow and laid back. Used to spend 20-30 days a year for about 8 years hanging out in Rome. It helps that I have dual citizenship - Italian/American.

Made the move simple - plus Rome is a great place to carry around camera gear.

Thank you for your answer, you have lived in many different places. I can understand you picking Rome, my wife would love to go to Tuscany and spend about a year or more there.

Whatever floats your boat Jerry! I retired a year and a half ago and my supervisor called me and asked if I wanted to come back. I was a heavy duty mechanic for most of the last forty years till being promoted to supervisor six years ago. Climbing around and under big bulldozers and other big stuff isn't what I wanted to do anymore and my supervisor's position was filled. I gave him a polite NO! Between my pension, 457K and SS, I wasn't wanting for $$$. I have a 'honey do' list and my kids sometimes need my skills around their houses so I'm still busy. My wife retired last June and will be playing babysitter for our newest granddaughter so she'll be busy for a while. Hopefully we'll get some time to get up to The Poconos and hang out in the trailer and drown some worms in the lake. Spending some time sitting around the campfire sure brings the peace and calm back to us.
