For a week or two, I'm employed again. I got a temporary job working on test papers for the NY State Common Core tests. The days run for nine or ten hours, so I wake up, take a quick look at the computer, and leave. When I get home after 6:00, I do the best I can for dinner, and plop myself into a chair in front of the TV. It's like I don't have a life!

My heart goes out to all of you people who are still working full time.

When I wake before dawn and can roll over and forget about starting my day for another hour or two, I think about working folks and feel sorry for them too. For about three seconds :) :) :) :) :)

I retired due to a disability. I was one of those lucky people who loved what he did for a living. Truth is I wish I was still working. Every day was different from the previous day, I traveled to every Hospital in the NY City area. From Northern Westchester to South Hampton. I was a respected expert in my field- I miss it every day.

I did that for 40 years--it was called teaching English.

A merger helped me to retire early and not only did I jump at the chance I packed up and moved to Rome, Italy which is now called home.

Still shoot freelance. The ability now to pick and choose what assignment is fun.

Do I miss the daily grind, the commute ..... yup about one second per month.

Retired in 2012 and was offered a part time job in consulting. It was great, worked about 7 or 8 days a month and all was good. That job came to an end when they lost their contract for the project I was working on. The company that got contract offered me a job but it was full time. This past November I told them that after 2 years of working of them full time was too much and they let me cut down to 20 hours a week. Much happier now. Work is highly over rated.

Where are you from originally, and why did you pick Rome to retire in?

Once I retired, I never looked back. After 44 years of the structured life, I said "Never Again".

Forty-nine years for me - 22 U.S. Army then 27 in the corporate world. Sometimes I look back but only for a second or two. Congrats to all you retirees!!

Yup - me too for 40 years - except my days were usually 11- 13 hours a day and additional on weekends. It was called "teaching mathematics". The good news is - I loved doing it.

I also held 2nd & 3rd jobs for necessary additional income.

I tried to get those positions when I retired from the NYC Dept of Ed. Too much competition for the jobs so I never got one even though I used to score the State math, English & science exams. Lucky you.

I read your post out loud to my wife and she thought I was just talking to her about myself until I got to the Hospital part. I also loved what I did, but retired because of a disability. Now I can't understand how I ever got the work around the house done while I still worked 40-60 hours a week. I too would like to do it again for a week or two or maybe one or two days a week, but not full time. But I sure do miss some parts of the work I did.

At 62 my family convinced me to retire----which lasted a year of daily workouts to repair the old ticker after Heart attacks that I claim were caused by the inactivity-----I went back to what I enjoy-----working (at Architectural and Engineering Management Consulting)-----have been at it now, 4 days per week, for 19 years, may even think about continuing past 82 but on a 3 day per week schedule----What do "Retirees" do every day??? What occupies their minds? Don't retire, you'll just get bored and in trouble.

Retired at 69, wasn't happy. Got to go back as a contractor and was thrilled. Loved it for several months and then the tedium set in. Was rolled off when the work ran out and now I'm loving retirement, very busy with numerous projects and will never go back!

Loved what I did. Made a lot of lives better. Retired earlier than I planned.

Started a small business (by accident). Absolutely did not want to grow the business to more than one person working (me). Today, I turn down business and pick and choose what I'm interested in doing. (I make chocolate things)

I somehow got some weddings and during the summer, when I usually play golf. People want me to make them chocolate for their weddings. I say no, thanks. I will do them in the late fall and anytime in winter. My big season is just prior to Christmas. This could easily become a store front operation requiring me to be open 7 days a week, but I say no!

I don't know how long I have to live. I'm going to enjoy the time I have left on this earth. Enjoy your freedom from the grind.
