Most sand is pulverized local rock, like quartz, granite, or lava.

You need a microscope and the grains each need to be focus stacked.

Yes, I was thinking that too. The site photographer(s) singled out a lot of the rarer unusual "items". Very cool.

I should try some photo-microscopy. I own an older 1969 vintage Leitz Ortholux microscope. It is a huge research quality beast with strange additional objectives for lower power opaque top-lite reflected light use as well. Those are probably for powder and sand observation. But this microscope is way beyond any of the classroom quality ones I used in college as a biology major so I don't really know how to use it properly. I obtained this as a discard auction from an employer I had once. I got it for a $100 bid. Thing was no one else bid so I could have gotten it for $0.01. I got the sales / parts catalog too. Back in 1969 the stuff I got for $100 in 1992 would have cost at least $10,000 new! Might not even need to focus stack with some of the additional objectives I have with this, say even 1.5x, not sure though.

Oh, so tempting! Do not tell Bill Hudson (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user_profile.jsp?usernum=39730 ). He will want to arrange a photo-micrography outing!

Hi lamiaceae,
I have been in hospital since the day you posted this and still am but finally tackled my inbox via ipad.
Your ortholux is the big gun of the leitz black enamel scopes. I have a half dozen 1950's - 1960's black enamel scopes assembled from eBay parts over the last few years.
The sand pics were taken with a fiber optic light source from above the sand as there was no cover slip and no reflection. The top light is what creates the dark field black background.
I probably used a USB microscope camera. The objective was probably 10x and the eyepiece 10x, so 100x magnification.
