what does lens mold look like?

Just noticed 3 weird marks on the inside of my favorite lens! I can't feel anything - it does not seem to be a scratch. It seems to be on the inside. I'll try to show a picture. I was wondering if it could be mold? If so - is there anything I can do? If I send it back to canon can they clean it?

the 3 little white lines

You mean those aren't reflections? It looks like stuff, metal flakes or something. Mold would look like mold, round fuzzy, alive. Are the white areas actually shaped as rectangular bars? Yes, Canon might have to take the lens apart to clean or fix it.

They are not relections - (the white lines are there - the purple mark is a reflection) It does very straight and rectangular, not round and fuzzy. That is why I was confused. But I have never seen lens mold before so I did not know.
I have senior portraits sittings all week !! YIKES

If you mean the three little dots along the edge of the lens ? They look like bubbles in the adhesive that they bond the lens together with. They look too uniform for mold....They won't have any affect on your photos.....

Go take a picture or two that should resolve your worry one way or the other.

Good step to take in troubleshooting the condition --- see if these "marks" (?) show up in some images. If not, then don't worry about it.

My Coolpix 7100 has gradually acquired quite a lot of dirt under the top lens element. It looks awful but the images are OK. That said, we rarely use it because the lens cover leaves have become balky and must be opened by hand.

TommiRulz,

Normally internal lens mold looks like dead shrubs in the desert. To see them you need a second magnifying lens to look through the prime lens with a white sheet background. Then you adjust the magnifier to focus on each glass element in the prime lens. What you see is the silhouette of the mold growth.
Internal lens mold must be removed by an authorized repair station. Small amounts of mold will not affect the captured picture, the mold is not on the focal point of the subject to film plain.
What you see in the photo sample looks more like light reflections from when the lens photo was captured, but could be lens coatings missing from the surface of the exit lens, or separations of the adhesive gluing various elements together.
To test your lens for abnormal captures make a couple of photos; one using a white card, another a gray card. Place a reference mark on the cards to focus on, and compare both photographs for any abnormalities.

I was just being clear about that. I've never seen white "marks" like that either. The Purple and any other multicolored lens coating reflections or ghosts are normal to view off a lens surface.

Mold can be a real problem. But that does not look like your issue. You might want to consult with camera repair, even to only identify the issue even if the white marks do not show in images from that camera.

Leave the lens in a warm, dark, humid place for a couple of months. If the condition gets worse, it's mold.

Obviously(?), I'm only kidding.

A dirty lens, inside or out, isn't thank big a deal.

Ha ha - well I'm in South Texas - it is humid every day !!! I had to use it yesterday for a senior portrait shoot and the pictures seem fine. Since the only camera store in our town is Best Buy - I'll just use it for a while and see how it does.
THANKS for the links

Depending on the humidity in your area and how you store the lens so are the possibilities of developing fungus inside the lens elements.
I keep my lenses in a cooler where I place in a container with a desiccant. I check and change the desiccant periodically. At times, when there is not a strong sunlight and when the temperature of the lens is similar to that outside I expose the lens surface to the sun for a few minutes. Be very careful here because if the lens has been kept in AC and you expose it like so without achieving the outside temperature it is very possible that the internal glass could crack. Fungus hates sunlight but keeping the lenses with a desiccant is a very effective way of avoiding fungus formation.
In places where the humidity is very low using a desiccant is not necessary if the lenses are not kept in a closed and dark environment.
