Reckon the Capitan is looking for work...
Although I suspect mechanical problem didn't take the control input to reverse the prop. The horn shows he knew what was coming. Great ship name!

As a native San Diegan, I have been on the Hornblower a couple of times. It offers whale watching excursions and has a dinner cruise as well. Still no word on why it happened.

I'd bet anything that it was mechanical failure.

Looks like he lost engine control or couldn't engage reverse - very painful (and expensive)

The report I saw said that the throttle has stuck or jammed and that it was at full throttle which I doubt. No captain would be approaching a slip at full throttle. The engine would have been set to give him only steerage speed because he'd know he had only the length of the slip to stop the forward motion.
Slamming the transmission into reverse at "full throttle" after the throttle problem occurred might have slowed the boat somewhat or more likely just destroyed the transmission having no effect on the speed or crash. (Try it on your automatic transmission automobile and see how well it works.)
