I use a Nikon 18-200mm lens most of the time. It covers just about all the ranges one would need. I use it on a Nikon D300 so with the crop factor of that sensor I get even more of a reach on the 200mm end.

As for me..... It would depend on: What kind of detail does one prefer....

There is the old school....A fixed focal length lens (single mm)
like a 35 mm, 50mm, etc always gives the better image than a zoom lens.

Though on my pocket camera, compact I have a 24 mm Leica I have taken some great quality shots.

F-8 is the one F-stop gives any lens the highest quality.

As for me, my ultra wide angle 12-24 mm and my 28-70 mm zoom lens is the only two I usually take with me. and so far
I have not been too disappointed..

My primary walkaround lens is the Sigma 18-200mm and I also bring my Sigma 15mm for non distorted wide angle. I think I'm the only one on the forum shooting a Sigma camera (SD14).

I usually use my Nikon 16-85mm. Great walk around lens. Gives you wide angle and a moderate telephoto. Very sharp

Most of the time, the SIGMA 17 - 70 is on my camera, and the 50mm F1.8 in my back pocket.

Of course, prime lenses cannot be beat for sharpness - so a good 50mm is always the prime lens of choice for me. That being said, I use Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5. Even though it is a bit slow, I am reasonably well satisfied with the results, but here again you will invariably run into the situation where you will wish you had more lens for a particular shot. What are you shooting with?

My walkabout lens is a Tamron 18-270 and on occasion a Nikon 24-105.

Prairieseasons,

What about an 18-200 on a D90? Just got my 18-200 and I'm loving it. I'm also switching to M only! :-D New life with my camera.

I'm out of town and travelling light, so today it'll be 18-55

Some of these responses are different than others because people have different internal images of what a "walk around lens" means -- perhaps even what "walking around" means.

I interpret the need for a walk around lens to occur when one has little or no idea of what photographic opportunities will happen that day. It might be people and close, it might be landscape or urbanscape and distant, or anything in between.

My walk-around lens is an 18-200mm lens on a D300s for that very reason - I don't know what pictures will be there. If I'm truly walking around with one camera, that will be it. If I have a specific objective, I will usually have a prime lens on a D90 for that objective and the 18-200 on a D300s "just in case".

That is the set up that I use. It is heavy but there is not much you cannot shoot with it. If I am just walking around a new town and I know I will be out for a while I will take my D 40 and 35 1.8. Very sharp lens and a 50 on the D 40 anyway.

Pellwanger, I have a Nikon D5100 and my wall around lens is a Sigma 18-200mm 3.5 -6.3 lens. I find I can take all kinds of shots with this lens from Macro to telephoto. It is light and with some filters, you can change the look of your photos.

When I got my first camera a few years ago, I opted for a D80 body only and the 18-200 lens. It has served me well as a walk around lens. The only thing is, it has spoiled me in that I have trouble using primes. I think starting with the 50mm prime would have been better to learn on and then graduated to zoom lenses. Just an observation.

The 18-200 is on my camera 80% of the time and my 60mm macro the rest of the time. Love my 60mm macro lens.

18-200mm, although the Sigma 200-1000mm would give me good reach for people I don't want to get near.
