Windows 10 kept wanting to install every day. One day I booted up to discover it was in the process of installation and I could not stop it. When the screen came up to accept the license agreement I checked "do not accept". Have not seen nor heard from Windows for about 3 weeks. Perhaps "do not accept" is the final solution to stopping an unwanted install.

Congratulations, Jerry. I know it was a long, hard slog for you. I have a KVM switch, too, and it never dawned on me that the darned thing might not pass through all the keystrokes. I'll have to check now.

Jerry - wow! That's a long time & a great deal of work.

My Win 10 desktop's 240 GB SSD hard drive was beginning to reach max storage. I bought a new TB SSD, partitioned and formatted it in Disk Management via Sata USB cable. I use Acronis software for backup. I then recovered my latest backup file to the new SSD. Turned off the PC, took out the old SSD and inserted the new SSD. Done - about an hour of total time and I was right back and running. All programs, files, ... intact. While the software subscription does carry a small price, it is well worth it. (to me)

Wow Jerry, I've been trying for 2 weeks to get rid of W10 and get back to W7!! I was comfortable with 7 but 10 gives me TMI. :(

Windows 10 installations for me have been better than Linux. So far, 3 computers and no problems. It even stabilized a netbook that kept crashing with Windows 7.

Support is always easy to find on the internet, compared to Linux support which usually a bunch of snarky computer nerds.

It is reported there are now 270,000,000 Win users. I updated within several weeks of the free offering by MS. (I think I updated around Aug. 20, 2015). No issues and love Win 10. I do understand there are a few disgruntled UHHers who have not had a trouble free installation. However, most Win 10 Hog users have had a similar experience to mine.

The causes of issues arising from the installation may often be older PC's, insufficient updates for Win 7, 8 or 8.1 or other individual conflicts (sometimes unknown or hidden) with an installed copy of Windows. I empathize with those who have had difficulties with an installation. I'm sure it is frustrating and time consuming. That being said, I take issue with blaming the Windows 10 OS or similarly blaming Microsoft. Is it possible that installation difficulty is not because of the Win 10 OS, but because of conflicts on individual PC's? I think MS "got it right with Win 10". I know most users have a similar opinion.

I have had the occasion to call and chat with MS support. I found them to be very helpful, supportive and knowledgeable. And, I received a great deal (hours & hours) of "free support"!!

Just my two cents. I do grow a bit weary of hearing negatives aimed at MS and Win 10.

I just leaned something new today. Both meanings of KVM: "KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V)."

Never heard of either before. You have a complex network set up there (at home?).

Never heard of anyone having that much trouble installing a Windows OS before. Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 practically install themselves. Beats the Windows 3.1, N.T., 95, and 98 days. Yes, your "network" was causing some problems I think. Also you probably should only put your OS on a SSD, not everything else. You should have a 1 to 2 TB HDD for programs and your files. I'm still wherry of SSD technology. Probably should have imaged your 8.1 OS to another drive, reformatted your SSD and them installed Win 10 from a Thumb Drive, External USB Drive, burned CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Or beg you PC manufacturer for a Win 10 system disk. But something tells me you know all this.

I'm beginning to like Windows 10, over 7 & Vista, never used 8 or 8.1. Just that Microsoft moved nearly ever thing on Win 10 from earlier versions. Once you find stuff it works great. I even customized mine to put icon links on the desktop so it looks like and runs like (in part) Win 7.

Assuming you are good with networks enough to have switches. Do you know how to fully network Win 10 with Win 7? I have a WiFi FiOS routered network at home but my two PCs, Win 7 & Win 10 don't communicate reliably all the time or able to exchange files like I want. It runs better from the Win 10 end. and best if I use Public folders not the Named user ones. Weird really as I keep checking permissions. My reason for not changing the Win 7 to Win 10 as well is I have many programs that do not seem to run under Win 10 and the manufacturers don't always yet have Win 10 versions. I also kind of use the two PCs for different things. Mine is set up for Image processing and my wife's I use for music activities as it is connected to our stereo system. She uses hers mainly for accounting and web browsing.

After spending days messing around with this, I made the decision to stick with 8.1 until such time as I get a new PC. I 'hid' the win10 update, but Microsoft keeps re-enabling it, so whenever I run windows update it will try to download and install 10 yet again, and never reach the updates that I am *trying* to install...

After a bit of work, I got it installed on my other machine, and I liked it enough to put it on this newer (14 months) machine. Now both are Win10, it will be less confusing going from one to the other.

As for MS support, I was dealing with a guy on their tech support forum. He was rude and sarcastic, and he went off on tangents of his own at times. If he had stuck closer to the point, I could have gotten this done a long time ago.

Well.... I have absolutely no idea whether or not I will like W-10. I had it installed on my PC Professionally. Apparently he had no problem doing the install but here is my problem....

1) whole darn thing freezes up to the point of having to shut it off in order to un freeze. This happens at least once every time I log into Edge Browser

2) I have been offered sex an average of 25 times a day, after logging into Edge Browser.... Being old and decrepit,,, I have not taken up any of the offers..

3) Edge is alive with full screen offerings of Porn Movies of all sorts...

I have tried to find where these are coming from.. NO LUCK
I have taken it back to the person who installed it...NO LUCK by him either
I have had a Good Friend who Does a great job fixing and finding Problems of this nature... NO LUCK by him either.

This happens on my CHROME Browser also, but in a less aggressive scale, but still enough to be a problem.

I downloaded Comodo Dragon Browser and have no problem with it....

I have a ASUS Laptop sitting 2 feet from PC and getting wireless signal from same Router the PC is using... NO Problems with it... Using Chrome Browser only.

This has been going on a little over 3 weeks now and NOTHING so far has been able to help...

It wouldn't be so bad for me, but I have 6 or 7 Grand children from 5 to 16 who use the PC... and I do not want them to see this kind of crap..

Mike

It sounds like you have more than a Windows 10 problem. I deleted Edge right away. I've been using Chrome for years.

Once you get on "the list" for porn, it can be hard to get off. I get nothing like that. This isn't a normal situation, so there should be a solution. Make a separate post about this topic on Chit Chat, and I bet you'll get good suggestions.

Install AdBlock Plus, and see if that helps. I use the free version of Avira antivirus.

My wife's pc was recently upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10. Various problems. My local computer shop discovered a number of virus's on the machine. They scrubbed it, and now it runs like a charm. Best $69 I ever spent.

Sounds like some kind of malware attack. Pretty much any of the Anti Malware (free) programs should take care of it. Years ago, I had something like that going on with one of my systems. They put Malwarebytes (free) program on it, charged me $99 for their part of diagnosing the issue, then running the "FREE" program , but after that, I loaded it on all my computers (5 total) and run it weekly as party of my regular routine.
My guess is that your grandkids are exposed to a LOT of stuff that we old timers can't imagine. It's a sad world that we live in sometimes :-(
