Steve, hey, we are all here dreaming together. Your list looks really good except it's all Nikon gear???

Sharpshooter...As I've heard said, Nikon lenses are the reason you buy Nikon.

Several folks here like the Sigmas 50-500 and 150-500 - maybe I should rent one to see how they do. I need reach for wildlife.

Ok....So you're retiring, and you get a nice little payout for all that vacation and sick time you've accumulated. You take a nice vacation with the spouse, but since you don't fish you don't need a bass boat. With the 10K you would have spent on a bass boat, what camera, lenses, and gear would you buy?

I'm not an expert, but people I respect are saying the Nikon D800 pretty much takes the cake.

Be sure to get something before Medicare part D come along and you get in the
"doughnut hole". Then you be forced to take pictures with your photographic
memory.

I'd probably go for a second hand boat and little cheaper camera or all around lens. A boat gets you places you can't go otherwise for great pics!
Willie has a good point. : )

Steve - If you are new to photography, I'd suggest to get a high-end point and shoot (Nikon is my choice) and get started with digital photography. These little jewels will do more than you can need and usually can fit in a small case on your belt. OR- you can go photo-equipmen happy and get a big photo bag and more DSLR camera bodies and lenses and get a new career as a human pack mule.
I speak from experience thirteen years ago.

Baldegle....Not new to photography. I have boxes full of photos taken with an Ftb and 6006. I hope to get a scanner soon and will share some of my better photos when I do. Be prepared to see my kids!! I now have a D7000 with a Nikkor 28-300mm, Tamron 10-24mm wide angle, Nikkor 50mm 1.8, and Nikkor 35-80 f4-5.6. One thing I'd change now that I've seen the comparative photos, I'd get the Nikkor 10-24mm. I have the D800 on order and will sell my D7000.

I thought that it would be fun to see what different people had on their wish lists. I certainly have mine. I call it my "retirement" list. We're 4 years from full retirement. Hopefully we'll do some traveling then. I'd like to get a trailer and travel this land months at a time, and I'd like to be prepared photographically when we go. In the meantime, I'd like to take some portrait type photos, hence the dual speedlights. Like I said, some people buy bass boats....others buy cameras and glass, and this was my list. As far as hauling lenses around like a pack mule....I don't intend to carry every lens all the time.....just what I need. As far as cost goes...I probably spent 50K on golf over 15 years....clubs, dues, etc. for myself, my daughter and my son, not including the 19th hole. I had a great time and enjoyed every minute. I'm not gonna chump change my new big hobby. Point and shoot? While we do have a nice Canon p&s that we can carry in our pockets, that's like telling me to buy my golf clubs at Target. Golf balls, maybe.

The FTb was/is a great camera. The poor man's F1. I had both. The 19th hole gets expensive. Wish I had every dollar I've spent on golf.

I just retired and purchased a Canon 7D, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (Still on backorder) , EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, Extender EF 1.4X III, and HOYA UV filters for all. Best move I have made for myself. Good luck and enjoy the retirement. Gary
